Re223 - Good advice indeed; I thought about that, but I don't suppose that many jihaddists would feel a need to infiltrate a Legion post - and complete ID would be required for Membership of course.
Back during 'Nam, some thugs would do just like you said - buy from a pawnshop or steal a uniform in order to con or scam their unsuspecting victims. One of their favorite tricks was to hitchhike; back then a lot of people would stop for a Soldier or Sailor, and sometimes fell for a phony and got raped, mugged, robbed or even murdered for their trouble.
When I was in the Army some 35 years ago, certain "ethinc groups" would routinely "lose" their ID card prior to ETS and secure at least one replacement, which would then get them onto Base and into the PX for cheap cigarettes and beer etc. for years after their "retirement" from active duty.
I don't know if they can still get away with that any more or not.
And don't we know; one of AlQuida's busiest operations is the forgery of documents and ID.
Hopefully, Mil Intel is keeping tabs on plants, infiltrators, and moles within our Military Bases - where we can be sure the enemy would love to have them.
And we can hope that for starters, military members of the ROP are being discretely but carefully watched.

Outside of a military base, a Legion post probably has the most uptodate information about what's going on in our military forces, what the morale is, what the ship out dates are for different local units, phone numbers that are not in the Yellow Pages, Commanders names, home phone numbers, addresses, etc.
We tell what our kids said on the phone, what they said when they came back from a tour of duty, etc. basically we're bragging to each other how uptodate we are and sharing our concerns.
A VFW Legion Post is hotbox of INTEL. We'll share info with each other that we would never say to a person who has never been in the service.
We know what's going on over the the National Guard units, what the Reserves are up to, etc.
Posts will accept visitors over for dinners and drinks etc. in an attempt to have them join us.
I'll bet if I put a phone tap on your lines and a couple of bugs on the tables, maybe one in the mens room I could learn quite a bit about what's happening in your area and just might pick up some national INTEL.
Why? Because we tend to let our guard down when were with friends, especially a man in a uniform.
Just reminding the other Vets to "Stay Alert" and remember that we are at war in Iraq and here at home.

( If everything appears to be going well, you obviously don't know what the hell is going on.)
