Interestingly, there are a number of stories from the opposite perspective. Many Allied POWs were killed by the Soviets during the final stages of the war in Germany. Few Russian soldiers knew English, but it sounded a lot like German to them. Given the choice of being killed by the Soviets in front of them, or the German police units behind them, Allied POWs were sometimes forced into sticking with the German combat units that picked them up. Made for some awkward situations.

What akward situation? The Americans were forced on what amounted to death marches into Germany - fed little and exposed to air raids and shot and beaten along the way by the Germans.
