Parents of Terri Schindler-Schiavo Told to Pay to See Their Daughter

Clearwater, FL May 7, 2004: In yet another bizarre twist of the Terri Schindler-Schiavo case, the Schindler family was informed that they must now pay a fee for “security” each time that they want to visit their daughter.

On Wednesday, May 5, 2004, Deborah Bushnell of Dunedin, an attorney representing Michael Schiavo, faxed a letter to attorneys representing the parents of Terri Schindler-Schiavo.

In her communication, Ms. Bushnell recommended that Ms. Schiavo's parents could be permitted to visit their disabled daughter if they would agree to hire an off-duty police person to accompany them. This comes after attorney Patricia Anderson, who represents Ms. Schiavo's parents, filed a Writ of Quo Warranto, demanding that Mr. Schiavo demonstrate what authority he has to deny his wife visits from her immediate family. Should the Schindlers fail to pay, they would be denied visitation rights.

Ms. Schiavo currently has an off-duty police person, paid for by Hospice of the Florida Suncoast, assigned to her on a 24 hour a day basis. Additionally, the Schindlers have reported that, during their visits, nursing staff frequently enter their daughter's room.

Ms. Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, have not been permitted to visit her since March 29, 2004 (39 days), when attorney George Felos of Dunedin issued a press release stating that suspicious marks were found on her arm. A toxicology study conducted on Ms. Schiavo concluded that no unauthorized chemicals were found in her system. Ms. Schiavo's parents, along with her siblings, had attempted to visit her the following day at Park Place Assisted Living and were turned away by nursing staff in compliance with "Mr. Schiavo's orders".

Statement of Attorney Patricia Anderson:

By recommending that the financially-strapped Schindlers may only visit Terri if they pay yet another off-duty police person to accompany them, is an effort to inhibit them from freely seeing their own daughter. A couple of years ago, Michael Schiavo contacted Terri's parents and offered to give the balance of Terri's money over to charity. He and his attorneys used this a talking point for the media - claiming that Michael had no financial interest in Terri's death. What they neglected to mention was that that particular offer was predicated upon the Schindler's agreeing to Terri's dehydration and starvation death.

This latest tactic from Ms. Bushnell is really no different. I will not be surprised if Ms. Bushnell uses this as another talking point with the media in an attempt to make her and her client appear less cruel.

No mother should have to pay an admission fee to see her child on Mother's Day. Perhaps Ms. Bushnell has forgotten how most people spend Mother's Day."

Her body, however, can't live on its own without hours of activity of people outside herself. That is the indication, I think.

If you believe that this is the indicator of when we are expected to die, then I bet there are millions of disabled people who would beg to differ with you!

Can her body maintain on its own?

Can a baby's?

Your argument is specious.

I don't egg; I ask hard questions of partisans of any stripe.

No you don't. You ask easy ones, leading though they may be.

You have been provided with simple answers repeatedly.

And a person today might say they would want to live, and feel differently when in the situation.

Yes. There are those who will have a G-tube for the rest of their lives, but that doesn't include the future now does it? It's very possible that things could change in that arena in the future now isn't it? Living wills were not a big thing back then esp. for people of her age range. Under the U.S. Constitution, etc. we are already guaranteed Life, Liberty, and Happiness. I fail to see what your questions have to do with Terri's parents being told they have to pay to see their daughter.

I'm going to ask you a hard question, and I expect a response, since you want answers from each of us. Of course, if you don't, then I'll take that as an admission of not having an answer.

Do you think that if God deemed that it was Terri's time to die, that there would be any thing man could do that would keep her alive? In other words, do you think man could ultimately trump God's will to take Terri home with Him?

Don't you think the fact that Terri is still alive is a statement from her that she wants to live?

Not without help at the level of basic functions at staying alive. If the constant help stopped, she would die.

I'd say, using your assumptions, that if she wanted to live, she would be able to without help.

And your point is?

I've given you enough hints. What do you think it is?

If you consider food and water to be artificial, then I would say we would all die were the same to be withheld from each of us.

Food and water is not artificial. It is the means of administering it (can she do it herself, or even take it from the spoon of another person) and on whose request (that is, at her request or not) that are the artificial parts.

She might be able to, were it not for Michael's prohibition against spoon feeding.

Well, gee, I guess we should have a judge decree that it is time to kill Christopher Reeve, since he can't feed himself either.

They would differ with me. Those millions of disabled people, they have no conscious life, cannot think, read or entertain themsleves, denied the pleasure of such simple things as eating? They are locked within their minds?

May we are in the last days.

Rev 9:6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

Tell that to Christopher Reeves.

Oh, now, list me the things Christopher Reeve can do that Terri can't. Will it be a short listor a long list? Can she write and produce a movie?

Jeb's Attorney in Schiavo v. Bush is one of the best attorneys around. Ken Conner gave a much better presentation before Judge Baird than George Felos did. Felos drones on like a buzzing insect. Too much meditation could do that I spose.

Hey, Connor was better than Felos on Greta the other night, too! All Felos does is speak legalese type of talk! Maybe he just bores Greer to sleep and that's how he gets his rulings. Or maybe it's MIND-control, or some other weird thing that happens when you delve into "I am that I am. I am that I am." I'm surprised that ole Felos doesn't occasionally belt out that he thinks he IS God!

If Michael had allowed bona fide efforts to be made to teach Terri to take food orally, then you might possibly have something of a point. But if someone is locked in a room, and nobody is allowed to bring them food or water, that person will die in short order regardless of how healthy they may have been when first imprisoned.
