Since nobody knows what Terri Shiavo wants, there's at a 50/50 chance she wants to die. Do those stumping to keep her alive realize that they may be in fact doing her a signal disservice? You would be making a good point, arguing that Terri may really want to die, but I tell you that the evidence (Terri's body) is completely opposite of what you have suggested. If Terri really did want to die, she has had the red carpet treatment from the physical realm to do so.
The first I'd heard of Terri was at the end of August last year, when she was hospitalized with an infection, so severe it was life-threatening. Why did Terri fight it off? Michael refused to allow her to get treatment for it at the hospital , and she was promptly sent back to hospice for "comfort care". Terri could have and should have died at that point, and many times since then. I believe that the reason she is not dying is two-fold:
1.)Terri has not died because she does NOT want to.
2.)Terri has not died because it is not really her time. When it is really her time, do you think man is powerful enough to overcome God's will? I think not! (How arrogant has man become to think that he is more powerful than God?)
So, I do NOT think that anyone who is rallying for Terri to be allowed to live is doing Terri any disservice at all!

How do you know that Terri Shiavo doesn't want to die?

Good post.
Her will to live is obvious.
To: William Terrell
How do you know she does? That is the far more pertinent question.
Do you believe Schiavo?
And as I pointed out previously: So what?
Even if she wanted to die, it would be an evil crime, in the purest sense of the word, for anyone to deprive her of food and hydration to make it come to pass.
We just don't kill our sick. Not yet, thank God.
To: William Terrell
We know zero about what Terri wants. You are wrong. If Terri Schiavo really wanted to die, with all the attempts that have been made to kill her(including the last attempt when she was denied nourishment and water for seven or eight days), she would have done so.
Through her fighting spirit, Terri has told us again and again she wants to live.

Fortunately impeachment proceedings for judges are handled via the legislature.

Can you honestly say you would want to continue your existence if you were in the same condition of existence? If you knew she wanted die, and could, simply by not expending the effort expended now, you would force her to live?

In nature, all things die when it is their time. If she has to be forced to live, who can say it's not past her time? And she may well know it and not be able to communicate it. How do you know?

If the artificial means of keeping her alive were to simply stop, would her body live?

If she has to be forced to live Forced to live?
Give me a friggin' break.
Feeding the weak and helpless is NOT 'forcing them to live'. I'd hate to be the little child of someone who had such a backwards way of looking at things.
They aren't forcing her to live. They are trying to force her to die. Most folks call that homicide.

What is the point of that question? There are a lot of disabled people who have G-tubes including Terri. Do you get a kick out of egging people on?

I don't know either way, but her body can't sustain life on its own. In our human past, this is always been the indication that one's time has come.
I agree, she should not be starved to death. It is cruel and painful. A quick and comfortable means is the best if necessary. That's what I personally would want. A trip to the Northwoods during winter. You only feel a chill very briefly, then you go to sleep.

"Can you honestly say you would want to continue your existence if you were in the same condition of existence? It can be difficult to accurately imagine how each of us might feel in a given situation. Today you say that you would want to die if you were in Terri's shoes, and if it were to actually happen, you might feel differently.
To: TOUGH STOUGH
The body can last several days without nourishment if there are no other demands placed on it. Her body, however, can't live on its own without hours of activity of people outside herself.
That is the indication, I think.

How do you know that Terri Shiavo doesn't want to die?Don't you think the fact that Terri is still alive is a statement from her that she wants to live?
You have not adequately responded to that question.

If you consider food and water to be artificial, then I would say we would all die were the same to be withheld from each of us. It matters not whether it is delivered by our own hands, or by the means of a medical device which has been in use since the 1800's (I think 1880's but I'm not positive that's the correct decade).
You see, food and water was not been considered to be artificial or extraordinary until it was codified in 1999. If it weren't considered cruel to withhold food and water, then I suggest we try to get the law to use this as a means of delivering the death penalty for the criminals on death row. If it's good enough for the average disabled citizen, surely it wouldn't hurt to do this to convicted criminals, right?

There are a lot of disabled people who have G-tubes including Terri. For the rest of their lives, in spite of their liklyhood of becoming healed? Who makes that choice? If she had signed a living will, would we have this discussion now.
I don't egg; I ask hard questions of partisans of any stripe.
