(CNSNews.com) - For Democrats Friday's Senate Armed Services Committee left more questions than answers about the Iraqi prisoner abuse scandal, but Republicans on the committee indicated they were satisfied with the testimony and would wait for the conclusion of the investigation before forming an opinion on the matter.
"The fact that these horrible abuses took place does reflect on the chain of command as well as the individuals who perpetrated the actions at issue," Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) said.
"I think that the answers to the questions leave a lot more questions still to be pursued and the forthright statement of the secretary of defense that his effectiveness going forward is at issue now is one that I agree with," she said.
Sen. John Warner (R-Va.), chairman of the committee, said he's confident the hearing "makes a considerable contribution towards the understanding of this very serious and tragic problem."
"It is very important that the United States Senate, the institution, the members thereof...understand that we are aggressively looking for the facts, asking the right questions, and today's hearing demonstrated the first step," Frist said, adding that other committees in the Senate in conjunction with the Armed Services Committee will provide oversight to the investigation.
"The acts were despicable. They've been condemned. I respect and commend the secretary for stepping up and taking the appropriate responsibility. This is a first step. As we all know, there's a lot more information that will be addressed over the coming weeks," Frist said.
"The president of the United States has set the course as to how this nation will show to the world what democracy means for us and how serious we are about getting to the bottom of this," said Warner.
When asked whether he thought Rumsfeld should resign amid the controversy, Warner expressed his support for the defense secretary.
"It is a presidential decision, but in my judgment, Secretary Rumsfeld has measured up to his predecessors and he responded I thought very forthrightly today to tough questions on that subject, and I think that should be the record," Warner said.
"It's important to recognize that no one knows all of the facts, that no one has all of the information," said Frist.
"And I think it would be a disservice to our government, a disservice to the men and women who are fighting for us overseas, if there is any sort of premature or knee-jerk reaction, especially based on incomplete information, and this is our first opportunity to receive officially in this body the sort of information through hearings today," Frist concluded.

It's in the hands of the print media and the Sunday talking heads now. They can make this as big or little as they please.
I am not hopeful it will turn out well.

The dems and their bootlickers in the press will try to keep this story alive as long as possible, but even with the release of more photos, I give it another week at most. Most people see it for what it is, and Rumsfeld's pointing out that thsi story was already released to the press months ago shows what a stinking partisan load of manure this whole manufactured scandal is.
What will they have left by August? Bat Boy and stories about how Bush's brain was stolen by Space Aliens?

Now Hillry and her fellow Senator Reed from RI were in Iraq during this timeframe wonder why she did not visit those "troops" in that prison?
The Clintons built an air tight wall in the Department of Justice, one has to ask if they did not do the same at the DOD?

I was sure they would be. Weren't you? Yes, I was. After all, they aren't being partisan and just want to get the truth. Just like the 9/11 fiasco.

Kind of like the pot calling the kettle black. When she comes clean maybe others will also. Until then, Hill of Beans, you know the next stop is yours. Please get off.

Oh, yes, I was sure, too. I mean, after all, he apologized and everything. Isn't that all that's required? (sarcasm mode: off)

What they wanted was the Secretary's seppuku. They'd be satisfied with nothing less.

They wouldn't be satisfied unless Rumsfeld was tied to a stake and burned, followed swiftly by a withdrawl of Bush from the 2004 election...and even then they'd grumble.

Why aren't they crying for an investigation into the leak of classified information to the media? They like investigating leaks. Why not an investigation into a leak that jeopardizes our troops, embarasses our military, and makes the U.S. look bad?
Answer to own question: that would require real concern for our troops and world image and all they care about is politics.
To: tbpiper
I hope the democrats buy a clue. Secretary Rumsfeld hit it out of the park, today. Several times.
