I greatly enjoyed our (USS Billfish) port call in Haifa in 1992. The local USO is/was great and we had a great July 4th party at a local beach club. Too bad these guys didn't get to visit Haifa itself.

...tens of thousands of sailors spending an average of $100 a day each.

The Navy must pay a whole lot better than when I served!

Haifa was a great port and in 1979 the Eisenhower was received very well by the residents of Haifa. I was asked by several IDF personnel if the carrier would support Israel. I could only answer that I would.
Great port and very very nice people, Jewish people that is, I did not have much contact with any arabic types and didn't look for any either.

In 1995 while a member of the MFO (Sinai) I took the train up to Haifa from Tel Aviv. Lovely place -- very reminiscent of mid-coastal California.

I was there in 1984 or 85, while on board the U.S.S. Nimitz. What a beautiful city in a beautiful country. Got the chance to tour the entire country. I can still remember eating in a Turkish restaurant in Haifa and the owner was so gracious, proud, and happy that we chose his restaurant to eat in. I do so hope to return one day.
