A key House Democrat said yesterday the way President Bush is pursuing the war in Iraq makes it "unwinnable," drawing a stern rebuke from Republicans who said Democrats essentially declared victory for terrorists.

"The direction's got to be changed or it's unwinnable, in my estimation," said Rep. John P. Murtha of Pennsylvania, a Vietnam veteran and the widely respected top Democrat on the military subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee. Mr. Murtha said the United States must either commit tens of thousands more troops and spend the money to supply and retrain them, or pull out of Iraq.

The Vichycrats sell are soldiers down the river. Just like Kronkite did in Vietnam. Is this POS in an even remotely competitive district? What's the use? This is PA. They'd just elect some loser like Arlen SPECTRE if the district went GOP.

"in every Greek city of those days, as in every Italian republic of the Middle Ages, the range of domestic sedition between aristocrats and democrats ran high. Rancorous refugees swarmed in the camp of every invading enemy; and every blockaded city was sure to contain within its walls a body of intriguing malcontents, who were eager to purchase a party triumph at the expense of a national disaster."

"But though " the fierce democracy" of Athens was zealous and true against foreign invader and domestic tyrant, a faction existed in Athens, as at Eretria, who were willing to purchase a party triumph over their fellow-citizens at the price of their country's ruin."

As others have noted at various times, what if the Republicans behaved this way in WWII? It would have unthinkable then, but as long as the RATS remain out of power, ANYTHING is thinkable until they get their way.

I've heard this. Robert Byrd mentioned it the other day.

Sad when a former Marine is co-opted by the left wing whack jobs in his party.

The Rats will do anything to get back in power, even to the point of selling out the country. Everything they do gives aid and comfort to the terrorist, but they support our troops. Yeah Right!

The only people who respect Murtha are the people in Johnstown PA, who he brings in hundred of million dollars of some of the most worthless military pork barrel projects every year.

as many Catholics, sadly many veterans follow the Democrat god...yes, god, because the party demands orthodoxy in all things.

Murtha needs to be reminded that the only battle that matters is the last one. He needs to keep his mouth shut, as do the other DemocRATs, to avoid being seen as treasonous. Oh, too late!

I was thinking about that today, image the media three weeks after D-Day seeing we are still pinned down in Normandy in hedgerow fighting calling for Eisenhower's and Marshell's resigning.

Sorry, but I'm not going to pile on Murtha. He's not a 'Rat like Pelosi and the others; as the Washington Times says, he is highly respected and a big supporter of our military. He is clearly frustrated that the Administration is not discussing the war with him and other members of Congress, and he believes there needs to be a change in direction and more troops in order to win the war. He may or may not be right, but he has proven credentials and a good reputation, so I'll listen to what he has to say.

According to Thucydides, the reason Nicias refused to withdraw his forces from Syracuse when the Athenian situation began to deteriorate was that he was in touch with people inside Syracuse who were plotting to betray the city to him...and that's why the Syracusans had him and Demosthenes executed afterwards (to prevent them from revealing who the people inside Syracuse were who had been in touch with them).

Looked at from the Syracusan perspective, the lesson is to hang tough even when the outlook seems bleak. Our Copperheads wouldn't understand.

I read that book. It was a classy piece of history. I had never put that much stock in The Battle of Adrianople before.
