Besides the backpacks that didn't detonate at the time of the terrorist train attack there were these backpack bombs:
***MADRID, Spain - Suspected terrorists who blew themselves up last weekend as police moved in to arrest them over the March 11 bombings had been plotting an attack on a shopping center outside Madrid, a newspaper reported Thursday.
Police searching the apartment found maps of Parquesur, a retail and leisure complex, at least two backpacks and a belt, all packed with dynamite and wired to detonators, El Mundo said, quoting police.**** Fox News

Here's another thought: Wonder what Mayfield's background was to have his prints on file in the first place? You can't find a match, unless you have something to match it to. In many states, applicants sitting for the Bar Exam must give a full set a fingerprints in an effort to prevent others from taking the exam on the applicants' behalf. I also wonder what he did in the military. Explosives perhaps?

Since the piece was big enough to bear the print and obviously did not burn, it may not have been right at the center of the blast. But it sure hangs a 2 ton cloud of suspicion over Mayfield. If I recall correctly, Spanish LEO found several other bags at various locations that were supposed to go off but did not. There was also a van or truck found near one of the train stations which contained bomb making materials.

Ooh, Mayfield sure has a lot of 'splainin' to do. Material witness my foot, how about a core participant?

WASHINGTON - Acting on leads generated from the Madrid train bombings earlier this year, FBI agents yesterday arrested a Portland, Ore., man on a material witness warrant and searched his home, authorities told Newsday.
Good to see that in spite of the Spainish cutting and runnimg from Iraq they are still working with us to find these terrorists.

Material witness
It's a good way to hold someone until you're ready to bring more serious charges. Especially if you think they'll start running.

I'm curious what the search warrant authorized to look for. If Mayfield is suspected of being but a "witness," then perhaps bombing plans would qualify, but bombing materials would not.

An American lawyer has been arrested in connection with the Madrid train bombings. Muslim convert Brandon Mayfield, 37, from Oregon, was taken into custody by the FBI on a material witness warrant, law enforcement sources said. A Muslim convert? Wow ... I never would have guessed that in a million years.

He was in the military and he applied to take the bar exam in Oregon.
Both will fingerprint you.

What makes you think he didn't? The use of multiple identities is part and parcel to the religion of peace.
Even Robert Reid (the shoe bomber) had a less western sounding altenate name.
We are being sold a false bill of goods by the media. "Johnny Walker" the American Taliban had an alternate name too.
