Well, so much for an unbiased press. Sooner or later this will backfire on them.
Perhaps someone with time on their hands could document the willingness of these same publications to permit their material to be used on other web sites. Especially non-copyrighted material.
"Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts. They will only allow the posting of titles and links."
I am curious as to what a third party provider is. Please explain.
Whatever a third party provider is, can the article be taken from their(?) site and posted.
here's more gannett sites to be aware of...

These publications should thank you for providing the handy links. You got me to click into the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle of Clarksville Tennessee. That's the paper we read everyday when stationed with the 101st at Fort Campbell.
I think the corporation is betting that even though FR is legally allowed to post Free Use excerpts, FR can't afford, or isn't willing to incur, the legal cost of defending a multi-million dollar lawsuit.
Other large corporations use similar tactics to discourage practices which they believe harm their image or their operations. I know because I once worked for a large corporation whose legal department often did something similar. At my company it was all bluff, just bark and no bite, but you can't assume it will always be that way with every company.
They did tell me that a short quote and link was okay.
