WINTER PARK, Fla. (AP) -- The young man who was caned in Singapore four years ago for allegedly vandalizing cars has been arrested in Florida on drug charges. Michael Fay, 22, was arrested at his apartment Tuesday by a deputy responding to neighbors' complaints about loud music. Fay, a student at Valencia Community College, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and less than 20 grams of marijuana. He was released Wednesday after posting $500 bond.
``I'm not going to lie to anybody. It was my mistake. I was smoking marijuana,'' Fay said later. In May 1994, Fay was flogged four strokes with a rattan cane on his bare buttocks for a vandalism conviction in Singapore, provoking outrage in this country. The nation's authoritarian government has been widely criticized for curbing civil liberties. Fay, who had been living in Singapore with his mother and stepfather, said he was beaten into confessing to a crime he didn't commit.
After returning to the United States, Fay was suffered burns to his hands and face in September 1994, and admitted he was burned while sniffing butane, a fuel used in cigarette lighters. He then went into drug rehabilitation for a butane habit.

Americans quite often think they shouldn't be punished for wrongdoing. Wrong again. Yes they should...severely. And, everyone who commits crimes should be held to the same standards, including the Islamic fanatics in the Middle East. Perhaps our biggest mistake is not executing people who continually are involved with drugs.
Caning should be implemented in the United States in schools and in regular law enforcement punishment. Hey Michael, are your legs scarred? I'll bet you'll NEVER forget that episode. Does anyone have any information on this guy and if he has children? Any information?

Obviously caning had no effect on his problems.
So much for the glories of beating people into submission.

Wonder if he fears that the Judge's sentence will be carried out by Fuji-san from Singapore on an H1-B visa?
Wonder if his Daddy is going to stop paying for his college education?

The headline leads one to think that Fay was 22-10=12 at the time. I doubt it. But has he vandalized any more cars after the caning?

One caning and then run back to the states to do whatever the hell you want does not make a very solid case study.

He was not given a sufficient number of strokes, plus he came back to America where one can get away with any manner or form of crime!(except perhaps racism, homophobia etc.)

Fay was flogged four strokes with a rattan cane on his bare buttocks for a vandalism conviction in Singapore, provoking outrage[Bull Crap] in this country. The nation's authoritarian government has been widely criticized for curbing civil liberties. Fay, who had been living in Singapore with his mother and stepfather, said he was beaten into confessing,[BULL CRAP] to a crime he didn't commit. What a crock of crap. This punk was busted for spray painting graffiti on cars red handed. He was not beaten into confession. Further the usual leftist idiot dolts were the only ones outraged. I personally cheered.
Further as I recall, the normal sentence was for far more flogs, PLUS jail time...the local authorities cut the sentence back to 4 strokes, and then booted this POS out of their country. His parents were wailing like crybabies crying barbarism...They were a pathetic display, just like their son.
I think Reagan was president at the time, and had words to the effect: "People need to understand, their are consequences to every action"
Memo to Fay...shut up
