The status of women is probably kept that way by the rich and powerful. Think about it from the viewpoint of a rich Muslim man:
- women are essentially slaves
- A man with money can get a pretty wife by simply making a cash present to her father in exchange for him agreeing to the marriage (Muslim marriages are usually arranged)
- If the wife talks back, he gets to beat her
- If she fails to please him, he can simply have one of his friends rape her, and then have her executed for fornication. She knows this, so she has an incentive to try hard to keep him happy
From the viewpoint of the father of a girl, she has no economic value. Once she marries, she becomes the property of her husband. His only economic return is the "present" a suitor might make in exchange for being allowed to marry her (her "sale price"). Thus, he may tend to look upon her as livestock, And sexually-intact livestock tends to do things that lower their value, so the livestock owner handles that by "fixing" the livestock by removing the troublesome sexual part (hence the rationale for female genital mutilation).

With the birth of my child approaching I am forced to decide (If I have a boy) on whether or not to have him circumcised. Why not to let your son decide when he is older? This operation cannot be reversed.
I also feel that I will have this done for my son because of the risks of infection and also in some cases....cancer.
Yeah, sure. You could amputate other parts of his body as they can get cancerous too.

It is disturbing that many Catholics have adopted a philosophical preference for Islam over Judaism.
I'd be curious to know the source of this information.

I don't know about "philisophical preserence for Islam," but a lot of Catholics apparently see Israel as an oppressor nation, against the 'poor' Palestinians.

Removing a piece of skin of barely a quarter of an inch on most (other) men causes no significant loss in the ability to experience sexual pleasure. It happened to me when I was a small baby, and I don't think I would know the difference today if it hadn't. How could you know?
BTW, according to the Maimonides one purpose of circimcision is to weaken sexual pleasure. It could make sense for ascetic/religious people. But such weakening could lead non-religious men to excess in search for satisfaction.

Now now fellow Freepers;don't you know that discussing and passing on these anectdotes of quaint Muslim traditional family values tends to shift the focus off of US military atrocities?..You know, injuring the self-esteem and emotional well being of those wrongfully imprisoned innocents seeking their national self dtermination in the tradition of the Founding Fathers? After all,Islam is a religion of Peace;or at least the pieces of those who didn't wish the blessings inherent of converting to such an uplifting, illuminated path to finding God....?Ok Ok,I can't keep a straight face or a typo free post much longer...

Comparing western circumcision of infant boys to female genital mutiliation is like comparing having your ears pierced to having your arms cut off. Its ridiculous.
I am willing to to bet that not ONE man who was circumcised as a infant has any recollection of the event or suffer any ill effects later on in life from this procedure.

Not to mention the effects of institutional polygamy. When the wealthy and powerful can marry/buy numbers of the youngest girls, a host of social pathologies is certain to result.

Young girls who are sentenced to death in Islamic countries present a problem for Islamic authorities. Islamic clerics and rulers, unsatisfied with a mere penalty of death for the accused, wish to ensure that these women will suffer eternity in hell as well. However, quite a number of the accused girls are virgins, and Islam teaches that virgins go to Paradise upon their deaths. As a solution this problem, in order to ensure the damnation of the accused, Islamic authorities will often order the prison guards to systematically rape female prisoners before they are killed. According to Amnesty International, this practice is widespread in Islamic countries.

The Church was obviously ignorant of the historic fact that Allah is not, and was never, the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob.Isn't the God of Abraham also the God of Ishmael?
Didn't He bless Ishmael because Abraham asked Him to?
The article stated a preference by "many" Catholics for Islam as opposed to Judaism.
Not the Church, "many" Catholics. With no footnotes or sources. (That's really my pet peeve.)
I have no problem with with any of the Church document quotes in your post. Moslems know there is a Creator. (Personal opinion, that's about all they've got right.)
To: gathersnomoss
There's a big difference between Catholics and Catholicism, particularly as practiced in the US. Vatican II, which was written by and for RCC elitists, has very little significance to the majority of Sunday mass goers and even less for the Chritmas and Easter crowd.
Methinks that you're better with words than to paint everybody with the same brush, unless, of course, that was your intent.
