US soldiers backed by tanks and armoured fighting vehicles today seized control of the governor's office from Shiite militiamen in the holy city of Najaf.
Heavy shooting could be heard and plumes of smoke rose over the city.
Soldiers moved into the area in four directions to take control of the building. There appeared to be few if any militiamen in the building, which was taken without a fight. Afterward, however, gunfire could be heard, and US helicopters were seen flying low over parts of the city.
US forces on Monday launched their biggest assault yet against militiamen loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, raiding hideouts in several cities and clashing with gunmen. Some 26 Iraqis and one US soldier were killed in the fighting.
Al-Sadr's forces last month took control of government buildings and police station in southern cities including Najaf and Kufa.

Actually that is what we did... we let al-sadr play at being a mini-saddam of Najaf for a month. soon enough, everybody else got sick of his goons ... so now, instead of being reesntful of the US, these other Iraqis are relieved we are around to 'take out the garbage' for them.
I think our approach of patience and resolve and now annialation has played out pretty good.

Why would any loyal American want to put our troops in more danger by feeding these photos which obviously would become "prime pr fodder" to the Arab world? to bin Laden? (Soros comes to mind.. smells funny!)No loyal American WOULD do that, that's why it's so important that we find out who it was.

To: Dr. Eckleburg
If Kerry's elected, he'll do EVERYTHING exactly the same as Bush is doing. Except he'll use a different vocabulary, and he'll push abortion rights and gay rights and tax increases relentlessly. Can I have a shot of whatever you're drinkin'??
Kerry wouldn't have the stamina to fight this war against terror, and he especially would not go against the Arabists in his own party.

What "purpose"? There is no doubt what the purpose of RATmedia hysteria is. Bush must be gotten rid of NO MATTER HOW MANY SOLDIERS DIE because of its treason.
This is just another shot in the anti-Bush war the RATmedia is waging. It is our most deadly enemy.

That was a phony excuse OBL used to attack. He doesn't care who is in Saudi Arabia as much as he did about what was occurring in Iraq, terrorism's center.

Nice to see our military is being allowed to do its stuff and get back to work.

IMO the eventual outcome would be the same. But Kerry would be a reluctant, non-aggressive, lying, fence-sitter and throw the entire operation over to the UN. The Middle East is going to be settled, one way or another.
The difference is that with Kerry, the Jews will become expendable...again.
I think Bush means what he says about Israel. Kerry doesn't.

Man, they're good. I wonder what links to Iran they're turning up. Helpful to "keep a file" on the neighboring countries.
