The State Department yesterday backed away from public criticism of Bush administration policies, saying that published remarks, while accurately quoted, "are not an accurate reflection of [Secretary of State Colin L. Powell's] views."

"The facts of the matter are that you have a secretary of state who's happy in his job, proud to serve the president, accomplishing a lot along with the president, satisfied with his service," Mr. Powell's spokesman, Richard Boucher told reporters.

Either Larry Wilkerson needs some discipline,or he's the master's voice.I can't decide which.

Given that diplomats have to lie for a living, it's hard to tell when they are telling the truth and when they aren't. It's even harder to figure out if they know when they are telling the truth and when they aren't.

Bush is very aware of the importance of loyalty.

I think this chief of staff is toast.

I am so sick of hearing whether Powell is happy or not, whether he "agrees" with this administration.

Is he sending out signals that he is interested in other offers? Maybe Kerry will get the message and let him come on over as VP.

He needs to quit spillin' his guts - he is looking like a whiner or someone seeking to be "bought".

Interesting that Prof Ullman would dislike administrations that have a vision for America. I suppose he would prefer a short-sighted, unimaginative micromanager in the White House.

From what I heard from Bill Sammons new book on Powell saying he's tired is that he's tired of the Bush bashing. Sounds like Mr. Wilkerson's statement changes that song.

I have a lot of respect for Powell and he is no Albright but I won't be sorry to see him go.

Ah but Bush is going outside the Ivy league,CFR vision of the world. He is from the "real" america, the America that these "faux Europeans" feel so superior too. It is the issue.

This is a complete media concoction. The original GQ peice has absolutely no quotation from Powell and is full of innuendo. It also is deeply hostile toward Rice. This is just more media nonsense. Powell has time and time again come out against these sorts of things and yet they keep coming back. This is the media at full bray. The WT should be ashamed of themselves for even printing it.

Yes it is, CD. Just yesterday, in my neighborhood pub, the liberal crowd was commiserating with eachother over how frightened they are that the "religious right" is in the White House. They went on and on about how their freedoms (such as "choice," ie. the slaughter of the unborn) would disappear if Bush is re-elected. This is the same alarm they routinely raised 20 years ago. Reagan was re-elected in a landslide and yet these same liberals miraculously continued to exercise their freedoms to denounce and betray their country, "redistribute" everybody else's income, corrupt the young and promote immorality.

Of course, when I asked one of them which freedoms he can no longer exercise that he could exercise 4 years ago, his response was a blank stare.

WRT Powell, the media at first attempted to brand him an Uncle Tom, an Oreo, a "house n*gger," etc. through such luminaries as Belafonte. When that didn't work, they changed their approach and created the myth that Powell and Bush are at odds. If Powell were to come out in unmistakable solidarity with his boss, lambasting the media on a daily basis for their misrepresentations, they would go right back to slandering him as Bush's house boy. The mere fact that a black man, who the left considers its chattel, is part of a conservative administration, is enough to inspire their hatred for him.
