Former CIA Official: U.S. May Fall Like USSR
News Max ^ | May. 5, 2004 | Phil Brennan

Posted on 05/05/2004 3:50:32 PM PDT by yonif

Herb Meyer is calling for a holy war to save western civilization. But the former Reagan CIA official has a problem: Most people don’t know what it is he wants to save.

"We’ve forgotten what Western civilization is," Meyer told NewsMax.com. "We no longer teach it in the schools. If you come to the schools where I live and ask a group of high school students ‘what is Western Civilization?’ They’ll tell you it’s slavery, the oppression of women and we don’t recycle.”

But Western Civilization is not made up of our faults; all civilizations have those. Meyer contends, “It’s the rule of law, the idea of individual and economic rights, scientific inquiry - this is important stuff and our failure to teach our children what Western Civilization is may be the worst mistake we’ve ever made."

Meyer was not one just to ride into the sunset after his government service with Ronald Reagan. During the 1980s he served as Special Assistant to the Director of Central Intelligence, William J. Casey. Meyer played a key role in helping Ronald Reagan and Bill Casey win the cold war. Meyer was also one of the first analysts to predict the breakup of the Soveit empire.

Now, this former CIA analyst says it’s the U.S. and the West that may just crackup.

In fact, he has just produced a new video, The Siege of Western Civilization," that makes his point, and explains to Americans what we need to save.

Meyer also had a distinguished career in journalism. He's a former associate editor of Fortune, author of several books and dozens of published essays about politics and economics.

Meyer has put together the case – sometimes in shocking detail - the continuing assault on the very underpinnings of the civilization which has produced the concepts of religious and individual freedom, economic liberty, and the rule of law which have guided mankind for centuries.

This foundation of civilization led to a flowering of art and literature, monumental scientific discoveries and a living standard unmatched in all history.

But now Meyer is worried Americans today are willing to lose it all because they have no idea of how it all came about.

He argues that there has been an assault against Western civilization.

This attack he sees as three pronged:

A new civil war fought against the existence of any moral code governing conduct

A war against the kind of population growth required to sustain a nation’s economy and the welfare of its elderly people

An attack by a brand of Islam which seeks nothing less than to subjugate the Western world. This video is available on dvd or cassette, and is one every high school student in America and their parents should see.

Meyer tackles all three threats and explains what has to be done if Western Civilization and its incredible benefits are not to be vanquished.

"People want to be talked to seriously about the issues that confront us," Meyer explained. "They want to be talked to about the war, about our culture and about our economy. What they need more than anything else, is a way to pull it together, to connect the dots so that they have a context for following the news and for understanding what’s happening out there, and that’s what we tried to do in the video: To give them that context, to connect the dots, for them."

Population Suicide

You don’t hear much about it, but the Western world and Japan are in the process of committing population suicide – and America is not far behind.

Current birthrates in England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and in Japan are far below what its required for a society to reproduce itself and sustain a healthy economy.

Russia is a population basket case. To reproduce itself, the birthrate must be 2.1 children per family. In Europe it’s almost half that, and in the U.S. it’s now 2.0 and headed down. In a mere 20 years, the population of some European nations and Japan will have dropped by an astonishing 30 percent.

"We seem to have forgotten what every primitive society understands: you need children," Meyer told NewsMax.com.

"They are a blessing obviously, but from a practical point of view they are consumers which an economy needs and then they grow up and become taxpayers. If you don’t have a big enough tax base you simply cannot generate the wealth to take care of the older people.

"And that’s what’s happening in Western Civilization today. We simply don’t have enough working age people to support the retired people.

"It’s the worst in Europe and Japan and we are obviously on the same trajectory. We can see what’s happening in Europe and Japan, so we have some time to deal with it."

Meyer says a second civil war is being waged against the culture of Western Civilization by hordes of neo-barbarians.

No Rules

"Back in the 1960s we just decided to throw away the rule book. We said ‘You don’t need rules anymore; everybody do whatever you want. If it feels good, do it.' That was a terrible mistake and we’re paying a price for it now. We expanded rights but no one wants to take responsibilities. You have to match the two. If you’re going to have more rights, you have to have more responsibility, but we want the rights without the responsibility."

And there is a worldwide war of terrorism against Western Civilization being waged by the fanatical wing of Islam.

Radical Islam Wants Us Gone

While noting that there are millions of good and decent Muslims in the world Meyer warns that "There is within Islam a radical streak and when the radicals are in charge, Islam attacks Western Civilization.

"It did that in the 7th century, it did again in the 15th and 16th centuries, and it’s doing it now in the 21st century. What we call the War on Terror, is in fact radical Islam’s third attack on Western Civilization. Terrorism is the tactic they are using."

Meyer insists, "We have to go back and understand just what it is we are fighting for. And when you understand Western Civilization then you have a very clear sense of who the enemy is, what they are attacking and why it’s worth defending."

Not only has our education system gone to Hell in a handbasket but our legal system is broke. The primary difference, I am convinced, between a first world nation and a third world nation is an honest, dependable legal system---and that we no longer have.

Even the recent fall of the dollar is telling us that "third world here we come."

"All nations eventually fall."

yes they do. different types of governments can last longer than others, but sooner or later they all fall.
i believe we have done quite well for a demrocacy {200+ years} longer than most. i'm not sure where we're heading, but within the next 25yrs something is going to happen. if you think about it, we hang on by a very thin thread to our lifestyles. if water were to go out or electricity for more than a week it might be over for this type of civilization that we live in. i think freedom has to be taken away from us for awhile sometimes, for us to appreciate it again. i think this slow whittling away of our rights doesn't alarm people enough.
that's...

Witness the line which can be drawn from early 20th century anarchists and communists, to the womens' "rights" movement (really just anohter anti authoritarian movement) straight through to today's barrenness. And that is but one dimension of the problem. Make no mistake, this series of attacks has been specifically engineered, by people who understood our society and its emerging weaknesses after the collapse of more traditional forms of Western society, very well. Sun Tzu would have been proud.

You think the United States might fall apart into smaller nations?

When the business and religious environment in the state where you live requires you to accept certain... ahem... ALTERNATIVE lifestyles (e.g. Massachusetts) that contradict your beliefs in order to put food on the table, you may be forced, along with others, to relocate to a different state. If Catholic hospitals in one state are forced to provide contraception and/or abortion, they will be forced to shut down and relocate to other states that will not make the same demands. It would follow that doctors, nurses, specialists, and surgeons would relocate as well. These are just two examples of scenarios wherein large segments of the population may feel forced to relocate based on personal convictions and personal needs. Once those deep cultural divisions take on a much clearer geographical form, that's when the United States will break down within. Either that or mob rule will come to roost. Public officials have decided they no longer need to follow the law (e.g. San Francisco). That's tyranny and fascism rolled into one...

The radical islam will eventually turn against each other and start killing each other. Look at Iraq, the followers of the radical clerics are already assassinating opposing clerics.

In US, the only way Islamic radicals can win is if they could Balkanize US. When we disregard the Constitution and start suspending the civil rights of the "undesirable" or minorities, then we are looking at the dissolution of the Union.

This author is making predictions based upon a straightline extrapolation of current trends. Nature abhors a straight line. As for Radical Islam taking over Europe: I'm betting on a backlash, and soon. If they ever reach their military potential, the Arabs better lookout.

RE: "there is nothing that says that another, crueler, dark age can't fall upon the world once again." I'd add to that; the conditions for such an outcome are all in place. The worst case scenario would be that all anti Western forces form up into an Axis, and conquer the West brutally. If they had access to CIS nuclear forces, it could be pretty bad.

I think the guy is quite right, he sounds like my father did back in the 1970's when I remember him talking about these things back then. I think the difference between the USSR and USA is that the USSR was mainly economic, Communism just couldn't get the "golden goose" to lay more eggs and ended killing her in the process. Where we could fall is the ideological divide that is brewing, and has been brewing since the 1960's. I think that is the main point or one of them.

Most Americans live with the assumption of invincibility. One chemical terrorist attack would change that quickly. Not even 9-11 was a strong enough message to, oh around HALF the population, that we need to do something about militant Islam.

My guess is that if and when the "awful day" comes, our society will not be morally equipped to deal with the panic. I think General Franks was correct in predicting that a state of martial law would exist, and parts of the Constitution would be rolled back for immediate survival of the republic. Let's not forget that Lincoln did numerous end-runs around the Constitution for the sake of preserving the union. It could happen again very easily...

As a Christian who knows what is required to maintain the "blessings" which those of the Soviet Union cleansed themselves took 70 years to end their bloody history as a superpower.

This nation is separate from all others in recorded history and at its foundation is "Rights given by the Creator no man/government can remove". Yet our own supreme court gave sodomy a "civil" right. We have the "Ten Commandments" removed from a house of justice, and the liberals remove "God" from the pledge. Now the big push is perversion of the institution of "marriage", it is written what took place in Sodom and Gomorrha.

Now these liberals as those in communist faith believe they are "gods" and seek to remove all adherence to having the Creator in any part or function of all things "public".

Western Civilization is based upon the "RULE" of law and who was the first lawgiver, those laws still stand to this day, whether we Americans like it or not.

They've been killing each other for decades. The difference is, they have a common mortal enemy in Israel and her supporters (i.e. the United States).

Militant Islamic groups may have different ideas on how to run a state once they gain power, bu they are united in one goal that they must achieve - the murder of non-Muslims. Militant Islamic entities are already in the US and have continued to operate in the US under the guise of "freedom of speech" or "freedom of religion." They probably brainwash those kids in their communities in the US as well (not all Islamic communities, but some). Wait 15 years when those kids are grown up and then you will have a problem.

As a Cold War veteran(not that it makes me an expert on the subject)I think it could easily happen here.
Relentless attacks from without and corruption from within, combined with an uninterested and lethargic dependent population...Atlas shrugged in the USSR.
Yes, it can happen here.

I'll grant you that. What we do here is the basis for a robust, eventual countertrend. However, conflict will be part of the picture, just about guaranteed. The only real variables are how severe, how widespread and for how long.
