The US Navy did haul out of the dustbin of history the rank of "Commodore" which is a one-star Admiral (equal to Brigadier General) for a few years, but went back to Rear Admiral (lower half) again. The term 'Commodore' is still used as an 'honorific' title to describe a senior Captain in charge of a larger group of surface ships under his command...
