My personal preference is .30-06. But a .308 would be just dandy, too.

That would be a .308 caliber also. Don't confuse caliber with cartridge. ;~)

Don't worry, I know of what I speak. My comment referred to the .30-06 Springfield vs. the .308 Winchester, the former of which is the more powerful round. I prefer the .308 Winchester as a battle round (such as in the
M-14), although the .30-06 Springfield in the M-1 Garand is also a superb battle round. For hunting and "reaching out and touching," the .30-06 Springfield is my preferred choice.
