I was watching a show on the Sudan and some of the tribesman there spoke english, broken but they could be understood but yes this was staged.

Ok, so how did all these peasants get these slick, blown up photos to wave around? Someone is providing these posters, and someone organized this thing.

These signs and photos are actually matted onto cardboard or construction paper. There is definitely Western influence here. Although, given some are grammatically correct, it seems hard to believe it could be individuals from MoveOn or other democrat fronts. They usually don't know how to spell or use English properly.

I welcome these protests as they are peaceful and showing that the Iraqis are truly FREE. And if US soldiers did wrong, they will be and have been punished, starting with that affirmative action General on down.

I've seen a photo of a young American soldier with two Iraqi boys. There is no nakedness or torture, but it is no less nasty for that. The boys are holding a cardboard sign. They and the soldier are smiling and doing a thumbs up. He is pointing at the cardboard sign, on which he's written: "Lcpl Boudreaux killed my Dad. then he knocked up my sister!" Imagine the scene: Lance Corporal Boudreaux, a soldier on a liberating, civilising mission, asks the natives to pose for a "memento". He gives them the sign to hold. What lie did he tell them about its message? "Iraq is liberated", or "Mission accomplished"? And who, in this scene, is the more civilised?

I'd agree that these signs were created for this group and that this is orchestrated. However, you are way off making the assumption that Westerners are necessarily involved. Hard as it may be to believe, most other countries in the world think that foreign language instruction is extremely important and insist that their students learn a second language. And the #1 "second language" taught in the world is English, for obvious reasons. Don't be chauvinistic. Iraqis are plenty intelligent enough to have some of them learn proper English. I used to drive a cab in Cambridge, Mass., and I've spoken to foreigners who speak better English, complete with American idiom, than people born here.

What happened was wrong and they have every right to protest.

I understand what you are saying about the media, but there is something else to note here...

News reports say this was a peaceful protest and it lasted about 2 hours. That says a lot.

We as freepers are pro-active. They have the right to be also.

It is essential for their growth as a democracy.

Look on the bright side, at least they aren't dressed as chickens, have bright pink hair....etc, like our homegrown protesters on the left.

Y'know, the scandal du jour is just that, a scandal. I think that the people involved should be court martialed. What I have trouble with is that

1) we have been over in Iraq for over a year and it's just now happening.

2) Just now coming to light

3) The media seems more jerked about this than what the Ba'athist have done to prisoners of any sort or that we still have people missing.

4) For some strange reason, this feels a little too contrived.

Something about this whole thing is not quite right. Maybe my tinfoil is a little too tight.
