The torture pictures represent a calamity of the gravest sort. We will have lost all standing in Europe, we will have ceeded the high ground in Irak and our story will get even less of a hearing in the Arab world. Americans will die as a result of these pictures and no one can foretell how many.

Domestically, May will make April look like a honeymoon for Bush.

Thank God for the pace in the economy, I only hope Bush can make that the subject of the national debate instead of Irak.

I'm afraid what it may also have done is make severe reaction to Iraqi attacks less doable from a political standpoint.
