16 members of Ansar al-Islam have been arrested in Turkey, suspected for planning an attack against the NATO summit President George W. Bush is scheduled to attend in June.

Police in Turkey have uncovered plans of a terror attack against the NATO meeting in Istanbul June 27 and 28.

According to the police, 16 militant Muslims were arrested during an operation in the northern province Bursa. The 16 are allegedly members of Ansar al-Islam, an organization founded by Norway-based Mullah Krekar.

Krekar claims he is no longer the leader of the group.

According to the Turkish CNN, the police seized weapons, explosives, and 4000 CDs with a training manual allegedly compiled by Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

The NATO summit will mark the formal entry of Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia into the alliance.

I suspect this is not the only bunch wanting to attack that summit meeting. 4000 CD training manuals were meant for many others.

I worry about the life and safety of President Bush leaving to a foreign country too. It worried me a bit when he went on the European trip before the war in Iraq. I always say a prayer for Bush every day.

I stayed drawn up when he was in England - I'll have to remember to breathe when he goes to Instanbul of all places. Wish Laura would put her foot down. :o)

These terrorists are just plain stupid. Do they really, really want to deal with a President Cheney?

Damn. I know he can't hide behind the sofa in the White House for the rest of his presidency, but I hate the thought that he's such a target for the whack jobs when he goes overseas.

Have they never heard of teleconferencing? Why send the President in harms way with lots of advance notice?

It would only take one suicidal Turkish Muslim assigned to security; guaranteed they've got it infiltrated.

We can imagine that, but can the terrorists? If all they read and watch is the mainstream partisan media, they might believe that if they did kill the president, everyone in America would be celebrating and dancing in the streets. As it is, 40 percent of the country would be celebrating, including the media.

The other question:
Do they REALLY want to risk making President Bush a martyr?

I don't even think that there would be much chance of the American people going back. If anything, there would be no heed paid to either the paleocons or the anti-war Left's arguments. I think the American people would want vengeance.

Maybe we got to them before they got the CD's distributed, or perhaps these are just the leftovers. Would be nice to know which is the case.

Agreed. These terrorists certainly don't give a whole lot of thought to consequences.
