I agree with Reed's observations. The first time I encountered the ideas Reed describes was when I saw the film "Zardoz" in college. I later learned that the movie was based on the play "Return to Methuselah" by GBShaw. Readers here might find Shaws' conclusions shocking, yet inevitable.
Consider that, in the US, more people are murdered in cities like Detroit every year than the number of soldiers we've lost in Iraq. Who is the real enemy here?

Well, let's not get carried away. One of my pet peeves is that the perception of crime is usually overblown. The perception is that thousands of people are being mowed down yearly in each of these cities, and it's unfounded.
2002 murder stats (I don't have 2003, sorry):
Washington D.C 262
Detroit 402
L.A. 658
New York 584
Chicago 647
Dallas 192
Our cities are safer than politicians would like us to believe.
