Cargo plane has rough landing at Twin Cities airport
Associated Press
MINNEAPOLIS - No one was injured after a military cargo plane crash-landed Thursday night at Minneapolis-St. Paul International airport, KMSP-TV reported.
The pilot of the Minnesota Air National Guard C-130 reported that the plane's landing gear wasn't working properly, the station said. Once the gear was manually set in place, the plane landed. But after it touched down on the tarmac, the plane tilted onto one of its wings, causing a small explosion along the wing.
The plane, which had four people aboard, circled for about an hour to burn off fuel before landing.
"We're extremely happy that everybody on board was able to get off safely," said Lt. Shannon Purvis of the Guard's 133rd Airlift Wing. She said the plane was on a training mission.
Firefighters arrived on the scene and doused the plane with foam shortly after it landed.

A small explosion? That looks like a large explosion to me.

Once the gear was manually set in place, the plane landed. Ouch! So, where's the landing gear?

You can crank the gear down by hand, but there can be a situation that it is not "locked". I hate to speculate before all the facts are know.

Ouch! So, where's the landing gear?I would say, by the picture, very near to the TOP of the wing now.

No speculation here, I was just commenting on the size of the fireball. I don't think the guy sitting next to the starboard side window thought it was small.

Any one you can walk away from . . . . is a good landing. If the aircraft is still servicable, it's a great landing.
Looks like this one qualifies as "good" ...

Yea, I saw that happen while working last night.
It was very impressive, the pilot did a superb job of holding the aircraft level while on the runway, for the right main gear was malfunctioning.
Of course once their speed dwindled the aircraft collapsed onto the defective gear.
It could have been much worse with a less experience pilot!

A small explosion? No, it was an attention getter even at 200 yards, and can be place in the same functional category as Ex-Lax!

The main landing gear in a C-130 is in the sides of the belly. The wings are too thin and too high off the ground for the gear to retract/extend from the wings like in most low-winged planes.
