[history]
The U.S. military says "several thousand" foreign fighters are in Iraq, a number that has remained fairly constant in recent weeks as those killed or captured are replaced by terrorists from across the border.
The invaders, who began entering Iraq in significant numbers in the summer, have emerged as a major stumbling block to turning over political power to an interim Iraqi authority on June 30.

Military officials said the regime of President Bashar Assad facilitates foreign fighters' movements by letting them enter Syria, giving them required papers and, at times, providing weapons before permitting them to cross into Iraq.
Damascus also allows the fighters to re-enter Syria to rest and reorganize, the officials said.
"We know that the pathway into Iraq for many foreign fighters is through Syria," Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told CNN on April 18. "It's a fact. We know it. The Syrians know it."
Shut the border down.

Patrol and shut off the borders. G-d these people are like roaches. Also, why don't we KILL the mutants smiling in front of burning Hummers? One or two days of killing the fist pounding, smiling scum assembled after a Hummer attack will end that Aljazera/CNN photo op.

The big differences between the Afghan/Soviet situation and the Iraqi/American situation is A) We're not the Soviets, and B) The Muhjahadeen fighters in Afghanistan were supplied by us. The guys slipping into Iraq today have no comparable munitions supplier.
I am much more optimistic than most that this situation is well within the US military's ability to control. The loss of life on our side, though tragic, is nowhere near what it would be if a truly credible force was opposing us. The enemy is weak; much, much weaker than we are.

Disturbing that the US military, and our politicians will openly acknowledge the threat posed by open borders, against US citizen/soldiers in Iraq, yet refute the idea, and deny the money to stop Al Queada from chainging entry tactics and waltzing in through the US Mexico border threatening the casfety of US citizens in the US. I'm not a closed border advocate, but the diconnect is astounding. How much does a one way ticket from Riyadh to Mexico City cost, plus bus ticket to the US border towns cost?
Just a fraction of what's being spent in Iraq could secure the border, and secure L.A. or another Southwestern US city from being attacked.
More on topic to the article, passively promoting the young disillusioned and brain washed religious ragtags of their countries to move to Afghanistan or Iraq is the best pressure release valve these regimes have. And the facts about the attack in Syria leads me to believe it was staged by Syrian agents of the Syrian goverment. The timing, the attack on an building that once in the past housed a UN office, lack of complexity, and lack of casualties. Syria's own OKC bombing event. Just as Clinton blamed Rush to cover political bases, Assad can show the US he too is a "victim" and wants to "stamp terrorism out."
The tons of explosives seized in Jordan, presumably from Syria, have not been traced back yet, publicly. If it was supported by Syrian gov. agents, we're talking about regional low level conflict through proxy religious and Ba'athist militias.

Those smiling fist shaking yokels only do that when foreign journalists are present, and sometimes only after said journalists pay them to perform their "defiance dance".

Shut the border down. Right. They probably will do that for Iraq / Syria.
No way fed.gov will shut down the u.S. / mexico border. It's not pee-cee. Might offend the socialists and illegal's. Can't have that.
What utterly traitorous bu!!$&1+

It's time to put serious pressue on Syria. Arm the Kurdish populace in Syria (like the Contras or Northern Alliance), back them with some special forces and even air power until Syria cooperates. Their military makes Saddam's look like the Waffen SS. They're a joke. We should also get Turkey, Jordan and Israel to apply pressure.
I believe the Marines have been a lot more aggressive along the Iraqi-Syrian border the last few weeks.

It's late, I can't remember the blog I read, but it was an observation from a freelance photographer in Iraq, who also noted that Arab news organizations have contacts with insurgents, in return for payment the insurgents clue them in on the location of upcoming strikes on US and coalition forces.
