Social skills can be learned -- even at an adult age.

Think about how a baby learns social skills through the interactions of first, parents, then, siblings, then other adults and playmates.

Hmmm. I wonder if I could have this. I certainly have a social disorder of some kind. I breezed through grade school, made valedictorian, etc., but they an inability to socially engage other people really hurt me in college and it is crippling now in some work environments. I think it is more of a social anxiety thing than an inability to recognize social rules, though.

My daughter recieved training in social skills from Orange County mental health people as part of her special education service, although she was never diagnosed as Aspergers. They just said that she had many of the same symptoms as an autistic child. They just handled each one of her disabilities separately because they couldn't figure out what was wrong with her. They just said that she was the most heavily effected (with learning disabilities) child that they had ever seen. She had a language deficit, dyslexia, dyscalclia, her eyes don't track together and something about her joints that I forget what it's called. Anyway the social skills training finally kicked in, she can now read better than a lot of other high school graduates and she works around the dyscalclia to some extent by using a calculator. I don't know if she is really Aspbergers, but I am sure my brother is and maybe I am too, a little.

Well this diagnosis can bring some ease to many.

I am uni polar manic and just don't like socializing. Girls night out and parties I avoid like the plague.

I have accepted my differences years ago and know people cringe and laugh when I speak up bluntly in a meeting I laugh too. I am either to quiet or to in your face. Can't find mid line socially.

But it is OK, because I do my work very well. Some of the best. Can't orally communicate well unless it is a tactless blunt statement but I forewarn those new to me.

Probably one reason I never wanted to get married.

I get along just fine regardless of the fact that I am friendless and the "cool crowd" seems wierd to me. I do have a couple of friends that come around now and then but they are like me in those areas.

It's ok though and it's like not being able to eat certain foods you just adapt to it and live life the best ability and for me that is with Christ as my focus.

I don't like the to fast days when I have to medicate to come down and rest so I can sleep for a few hrs. which the brain needs, but I cope and adapt and thankful I am not a clueless sheep in life following the crowd.
