Autism Ping.

I heard it too and was somewhat surprised at his callousness.  Shyness and Asperger's Syndrome are not the same thing.  Saying the name of the syndrome over and over to make it sound like "a**-burger"

Giving him the benefit of the doubt, I think he was mocking the companies that now market anti-depressant drugs as anti-shyness drugs.

There are however, many adults who fit the category.  Usually they're programming computers!

He wasn't reading the article perhaps was he? They say that in the article he read today:

"He still says things that are callous, at least on the surface.

"She'll say something about how terrible her clothes look," Mr. Jorgensen explains. "I'll say, `Yes, honey, those are terrible-looking clothes,' when really she's wanting some affirmation that her clothes don't look terrible."

At those moments, Ms. Jorgensen now tells her husband that he is acting like an "ass burger," a running joke that defuses anger on both sides. But such exchanges have mostly disappeared because Ms. Jorgensen knows that she is unlikely to get what she wants that way.

I have two children that have/had severe speech problems. Sometimes shyness is caused by speech problems.

Both the shyness and the speech problems are hard to deal with. I does affect their education and then it will affect their ability to go to college and get a job.

Sometimes people think my daughter is okay because she is very cute to look at. It's what they don't see that is scary. She has severe brain damage. It's only visible to an MRI. People think she's quiet because she is shy. She actually has a very hard time talking. She's 7, and she's been in therapies since she was 2. She'll be in therapy for many years to come. So far, she is keeping up in school, but we'll see how she does in the next few years.

My daughter is actually doing better than the kids with Asperger's, so I can't imagine what those parents are going through. My daughter has a great attention span, is great at math, and is an average reader. She also is doing well in a regular ed class. The kids I know with Asperger's do not function in a regular ed class, and they are having a hard time with their education. I feel sorry for the kids and their parents.
