The point isn't that people should never joke about things or never say that something's "retarded".
It's the assumption that because there are overstated and false diagnoses of certain maladies (like ADD) that there aren't people who genuinely have a problem.
It's that attitude, that everyone diagnosed with such an ailment is faking it or just needs more discipline, that's far more offensive than some joke.
It's very important to denounce those who make bad diagnoses or put every excitable kid on Ritalin. But it's also important to recognize that, in spite of the charlatans, some people genuinely have disorders that greatly affect their lives and they're not faking it.
