Why is everyone assuming that these were some peaceful Iraqi civilians that the soldiers decided to torture?

Because Dan Rather wants them to think that way

I do recall another soldier that was accused of something similar as to this charge because he was trying to save the lives of his men

That's what I'd like to know. How did he know it, and when did he find out? My guess is there is some anti-war nut whistleblower on the inside that the liberal stooges in the media have been hoping to dig up.
