"I have known Jared for many years. This is completely not like him. Something is going on and instead of people trying to help and find the cause; everyone just wants to speculate the worst and poke fun."

I think some of the flippancy is simply relief that this very strange situation did not end in tragedy. I am glad to hear that Jared does have a support network that can help him come to terms with his own behavior as this develops.

Some years ago, a close friend of mine was involved in a bizarre and highly publicized incident that did end tragically. My friend was a model citizen in many respects. He was 29, married, and the father of two young children. He had been an officer in the Marines and operated a small property management business while he pursued a graduate degree in philosophy. He was a brilliant debater and extremely knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects. One morning, out of the blue, he drove to a local bank just before it opened, stuck a pistol in the manager's face and robbed the place of something like $30,000. A witness got his license number, the police spotted him within minutes and he led them on a long chase into the country. The cops cornered him on a dirt road. Instead of surrendering and taking the consequences, he put the pistol to his head and blew his brains out. The story led on all the local news programs that night and that's how I learned of it. My first reaction was complete disbelief, it couldn't be the same guy, but it was. To this day, nobody has any inkling of what motivated him to rob a bank. He did not have any serious financial problems, his marriage was happy and stable, and he had never shown any overt indications of mental distress. For months afterward, I reviewed everything he had said or done in my presence, fearful that I might have missed some sign that could have saved his life. There was nothing, and his family and other friends also came up empty in their pursuit of an explanation. It is just a complete mystery to all who knew him and will probably remain so forever.

Too bizarre. I have a fictional idea for some future novel (not the one I'm working on now) involving a tiny implanted chunk of material saturated with some enzyme. It remains solid, until a specific frequency etc is beamed at it. The subjects act totally normally, until one fine day they are "beamed," the enzyme is released into a specific area of the brain, and they flip out into a psychotic episode. Just guide them to the company picnic or bank or executive suite, and "trigger" them into homicidal rage. Just fiction, but reading about cases such as the one you related made me thing of it again.
