With the success of "The Passion Of The Christ," Mel Gibson can pretty much make whatever movie he wants, and he is once again looking back in time to produce an epic about Boudicca, who led Britain against Roman conquerors.
The Scotsman newspaper reports that the film will be like "Bravehart - with a bra."
Boudicca rose from peasant girl to military leader, and united the Celtic tribes of Britain.
The film will be directed by Gavin OConnor, who told the Hollywood trade paper Variety: "What drew me is that she was driven by personal revenge. Her goals were never political and never went beyond avenging her slain husband and child.
"She managed to bring together all of these warring tribes to stand against the Roman Empire," he added. "It is a masculine story with a female point of view."
Brian Klugman, who co-wrote the script with Lee Sternthal, told Variety, "We spent over a year researching Queen Boudicca, Celtic Britain and the Roman Empire, and another year writing the script.
If it's anything like "The Passion" and "Bravehart," it is sure to be a beautifully made, powerful epic.

Big difference here...Mr. Gibson is NOT directing, he's producing, which means he's coming up with the cash. It's the director who sets up the scenes and shots, and tells the actors what to do.
Nonetheless, it should be a fascinating story. Gibson seems to love historical epics.

I hope this is better than "The Singing Detective", a film Icon Production recently produced with Robert Downey.
Couldn't even get thru that one...trash.

Enya's first break was her soundtrack to a BBC series "The Celts". Dig it up it is great.
Her "Boudicca" theme is fantastic.

Already have the album. She takes a lot of ribbing, but I think she's a remarkably talented woman. I love her music.

I'd often wondered why it hadn't been made into a feature film yet, given the rash of old historical epics, and the bonus it can be a "female empowerment" story (I'm terrified of someone like Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman getting cast as Boudicca.)
PBS had a short miniseries on Boudicca with the English doctor from "ER" in the starring role, it was pretty good, she was good at screaming and lopping of the heads of Romans with swords, which is what you really want from Boudicca.

I don't think Julia "Horse Mouth" Roberts, or Nicole "Beanpole" Kidman are bodacious enough to play Boudicca.

"Funny, so do most Americans." Well, nobody teaches them about them in school anymore. No one points out these heroic figures in history to them, except filmmakers.

Sigourney Weaver?

To each his own. Hollywood's current crop of anorexic French Poodles really doesn't do it for me. WAYYYY too skinny and self-absorbed, IMHO.

Possibly. How old was Boudicca during her campaigns? Weaver is over 50 now. That's not a bad thing, in and of itself, but how accurate would it be?
Of course, H'Wood would invariably want some 20-year old honey to do it.

If you like Enya, try her sister Maire Brennan. Her songs are deeply religious, evocative and moving. Many of her lyrics are written and performed in old Irish Gaelic. "Song of David" on her "Perfect Time" CD is phenomenal.
