I remember seeing a sign in the WAVE barracks, (Don't rember where) that said....
"If you're going to give it away, give it to a sailor"
I always appreciated their dedication after that

Geez, when I shipped out to Afghanistan I was happy with some cookies...
I remember an interview with an aged Japanese fellow who had been a grunt soldier
in WWII.
He still was ticked that the young women of Japan were part of a patriotic effort to
sew up a garment for the departing soldiers that I guess we'd call a "tummy warmer"...
basically a quilted/padded garment that covered the torso (guess it might have
helped conserve body heat like a vest).
The old soldier said "I didn't want the young women to sew for me -- I wanted their bodies!
It was the least they could do because I was likely to die!"
