The P-3 ORION also does feet-dry surveillance and reconnaisance. Several of ours avoided SAMS over Iraq last year. We also patrolled shipping lanes searching for terr ships smuggling weapons in the Middle East. They can carry SAMs as well. We did quite a lot of stuff that was unhealthy, and most of it we did completely unarmed and without fighter cover ourselves.

I've also done two deployments with combat flights over such lovely spots as Bosnia and Kosovo. You know, where they shot down a stealth fighter?
