Oregon Taxes
Tax Foundation a "nonpartisan" educational organization ^ | April 27, 2004 | Denny

Oregon ranks 34th total state and local taxes?

Oregon as one of the top ten states in terms of favorable business climates?

State and local taxes account for less than one percent of the cost of doing business?

Come on! Who are the lying liars, here? Can anyone substantiate the claim that these Tax Foundation guys are "nonpartisan"? Sounds like a lot of typical Oregon liberal hooey to me!

The property taxes are huge. I was there last summer and a real estate agent told me the taxes for homes are between 12-14% depending on the county.

Comparing the 50 States' Combined State/Local Tax Burdens in 2004

(posted April 2004, to be revised April 2005)

Each state’s total tax burden (taxes as a percentage of income) is a combination of federal, state, and local taxes. Total tax burdens in each state are shown in the turquoise portion of the table (columns 5, 6 & 7). It can be instructive, however, to strip out the federal tax burden and compare just the tax burdens of states and localities. This is the yellow portion of the table on the left (columns 1, 2 & 3).

Follow each row to see how a state's ranking changes when federal taxes are added back in. Generally, high-income states rise because, with their high costs of living and commensurately higher salaries, they are hit harder by the progressive federal income tax. Low-income states that have high state-local tax burdens fall in the ranking when federal taxes are added in.

I lived in Oregon for about 12 years. I've moved to Texas. Texas has not state income tax. What I paid in Oregon State income tax pays my monthly mortgage in Texas.

That’s why a lot of people lived in Vancouver (or White Salmon or wherever) – WA had no state income tax so they lived there, and Oregon had no sales tax so they shopped there.

You'd go to Lloyd Center or Mall 205 and see an awful lot of WA license plates in the lot.
