A bishop in California took on a local woman running for the state legislature in the 1990s, and denied her the Eucharist.

She won her seat, even though she was behind at the time the bishop took his action.

I think the bishop's name was Wiegand.

The first example to come to mind would be Pope Leo X vs. Marin Luther.
