Aren't the delegates that Kerry already won in the primaries legally bound to vote for him on the first ballot?

There is no "legally" when it comes to party politics. It is totally up to the party to select whoever they want. The Kerry delegates are bound by Democrat party protocol to cast their first vote for Kerry, but Democrats are not necessarily bound by anything. I see a fair possibility that Kerry will be "Torched" out of the nomination and replaced.
