If ever our troops needed a moral boost from us, this is the time. Instead CBS is seeking to demoralize them and cast them as thugs and villains. So many families have lost their loved ones in this war. They don't need this kind of "reporting" that is totally insensitive to their pain. This is the same network that stooped so low as to show pictures of dying Princess Diana. If you have TV station options, think about what you are sponsoring when you watch this network and switch channels, take a walk or read a book instead.

CBS TO BERATE OUR TROOPS - TIME TO AXE CBS FROM OUR TV SCREENS

National Guard is pulled off bridge detail
Financial burden cited; other agencies take over

By Mark Prado, IJ reporter

Rifle-toting California National Guard troops will leave the Golden Gate Bridge on Friday after spending more than two years protecting the national landmark in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The U.S. Park Police, Golden Gate National Recreation Area rangers, California Highway Patrol, the Coast Guard and Golden Gate Bridge District officers will fill the Guard's role with help from other agencies, officials said.

"It may not look the same, but security will remain high," said Mary Currie, bridge district spokeswoman.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger made the call in late March to pull the troops, officials said.

Gary Winuck, chief deputy director of the state Office of Homeland Security, said the cost of having the Guard on the bridge 24 hours a day, seven days a week was a factor in the decision.

"It was a financial burden on the guard," Winuck said.

The Guard initially asked Schwarzenegger last November to take troops off as soon as possible because of growing costs.

The Guard spent about $5 million a year providing security on the bridge, but it was not reimbursed by the state. More than 50 troops are assigned to the bridge but, citing security issues, officials declined to say how many are on patrol at any one time.

Even with the Guard's exit, Winuck said he is confident the bridge will be well protected.
