SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY, Calif. - Aaron and Sara Flanagan knew that a house in the San Francisco Bay Area, the nation's priciest real-estate market, was out of the question. But a sprawling new development just over the coastal mountains seemed like a perfect fit. Suburbia without cookie-cutter monotony. Lots of parks and open space. A school two blocks away. The promise of old-fashioned neighborhoods. And at $414,000 for four bedrooms, they could just squeeze in.

Or, they could come to suburban Atlanta where we have parks, wide sidewalks, friendly neighbors and my 5 bed/3 bath home cost just shy of $200,000. Plus, the people here are charming and usually bent toward conservativism.

For years I've driven by the original Mountain House farm and wondered why there weren't houses around there. Now, how about Altamont Pass? Lots of land there.

It's curious (g) that the two urban areas of the country that have the highest housing prices..metro NYC area and the SF bay area..also center around the cities with the most onerous rent-control laws...
