New Iraqi Flag Meets With Public Disapproval (ZOT!!! Same for poster.)

BAGHDAD, April 26 -- It was supposed to be the perfect symbol for a new and unified Iraq: an Islamic crescent on a field of pure white, with two blue stripes representing the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and a third yellow stripe to symbolize the country's Kurdish minority.

But the new national flag, presented Monday after an artistic competition sponsored by the Iraqi Governing Council, appears to have met with widespread public disapproval here...

I actually had a so-called "conservative" friend tell me the only reason we're in Iraq is to steal their oil and that President Bush is clever and wants us to think it's for other reasons.

Course, this after comments that all middle easterns should be deported, etc.

So these ideas don't just come from liberals, but from segments of society who know nothing about conservative minded foreign policy.

How does it exactly "ignore" history and the flag was DESIGNED by Iraqis themselves.

Most all Islamic flags have green on them. It is the traditional color of Islam and Jihad.

I know... without hate of Israel, you can't have a viable Iraq. Nothing we do for these folks will ever please them. If they want to live in the 7th Century, that's their affair, so long as they don't acquire weapons of mass destruction aimed at New York and Los Angeles.

The real objection to the new flag is it omits the traditional Arab nationalist colours of black and red which reminds the Sunnis the Iraq they've run for decades is histoire. It sticks in their craw there is recognition the sub-human Kurds are an equal part of the Iraq nation. They'd rather die than accept a flag that makes them less than pure Arabs.
