The term "bastard" is towards the innocent child, not the parents. Unless you can tell me how you chose your married parents prior to your birth it is a stupid term to use- no matter if it was used in the "good old days". The stigma should be on the parents who participated in the sin of fornication (whether a child was created or not), not the child.

Part of the reason why we have the problem we do is because pre-marital (and even extra-marital, really) sex is no longer condemned as it once was.

Forcing people who have business making a lifelong commitment to so solves nothing.

I'd like to know more about how Mr. Snee was recruited to Boston College. Could a former Eagles' coach be involved?

Inquiring minds want to know...

Pointing out that they could have made a worse decision constitutes a serious response.

It's my understanding that the term "a bastard child" was directed towards the parents, as in, "You have a bastard child", and not towards the child ("You are a bastard child"). At least, not in my experience, or way of thinking.

I apologize - that was condescending in tone. Your response was the same type of flip response that I've heard before, and seems to me to be a lazy response, like we would come down on pregnancy altogether - if you get pregnant, kill the child - instead of coming down on pre-marital sex, shaming the parents, but not at all condoning abortion.

The mere fact of imposing shame should not automatically mean that abortion should be an option. It seems to me that the legalization of abortion was also the beginning of ending the stigma of out-of-wedlock births, ironically. It's all part of our culture. Societal pressure used to prevent a lot of pre-marital sex and, therefore, out-of-wedlock pregnancies. This same shame also prevented abortions, even when available.

You have never seen the phase- "You're a bastard"? Trust me, the word is towards the child.
