So if Kerry managed to earn a Purple Heart while at Cam Ranh, it was miraculous. Everyone knows that he ran out there after the last shell exploded, found a piece of shrapnel, and scratched himself with it. Then he immediately went to HQ to put his name in for a Purple Heart.
Tried and true method.

Actually it would take a miracle to find a piece of shrapnel at Cam Ranh. Unless it was from training round.
I'm pretty sure that on Kerry's mission to intercept a smuggler, no one else remembers taking enemy fire.
