Syria in the Gunsights

Jack Wheeler

Monday, April 26, 2004

The argument for taking out the government of Syria is growing by the day. The only things holding back the Marines from seizing downtown Damascus and imprisoning Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad as a war criminal are (a) the lack of manpower to prevent the place from collapsing into anarchic chaos before a transitional government can be set up, and (b) the literally hysterical objections of the State Department. Consider these justifications, any one of which would be reason alone to rid Syria of the al-Assad pestilence:

Syria has a 600-mile border with Iraq. Al-Assad is orchestrating the insertion of thousands of Al Qaeda, Hizbollah, and other Jihadi terrorists into Iraq, arming them, and letting them come back to Syria and resupply. It is these foreign terrorists that are primarily responsible for the atrocities in Fallujah and elsewhere, killing US and Coalition soldiers as well as innocent Iraqis.

As arms inspector David Kay has noted, Saddam’s “missing WMD” were shipped to Syria before the war began. Starting in January 2004, Al-Assad began flying shipments of WMD components to Sudan to hide them in warehouses in Khartoum, the Sudanese capital. Afraid of the US response, Sudan’s leader Omar Bashir is now having second thoughts, and is ordering that Syria take back its Scud-C and Scud-D ballistic missiles and chemical weapons components.

On April 17, Jordanian police seized an amount of WMD chemicals being carried into Jordan from Syria by Al Qaeda terrorists. Three booby-trapped pickups were loaded with explosives and VX poison gas containers. Jordan’s King Abdullah and his intelligence chief General Kheir publicly announced that if the terrorists had succeeded in their confessed plan to detonate the VX in Amman near the American Embassy, over 20,000 people would have been massacred.

The evidence is becoming overwhelming that the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad provided the hiding place for Saddam Hussein’s weapons of mass destruction, that it has begun providing them to Al Qaeda terrorists, and that it is waging a proxy guerrilla war upon the U.S. and the Coalition military in Iraq.

Sanctions, such as those authorized by Congress last December in the Syrian Accountability Act, and other forms of political and economic pressure, are very rapidly becoming far-too-little-far-too-late solutions, and very dangerously so.

Twenty thousand human beings were almost slaughtered in Jordan this month. Whatever anarchic chaos occurs in Syria after a B2 strike obliterates the Presidential Palace in Damascus, it is preferable to al-Assad-backed terrorists succeeding in their next VX attempt.

Syria is leaving President Bush with little else than the military option. The sooner he exercises that option, the more lives will be saved, American, Jordanian, and Iraqi.

I think it will be similar to the last scene of The Godfather.

JLAGRAYFOX,

It's simple: Most Palestinians and Syrians are the Gutter-Dogs of Hummanity.

Palestinians and Syrians breed like sub-human vermin, then sacrifice their own children to become "Human Bombs", killing others' Children in the process.

Palestinians and Syrians are typical of the Arab mental squalor that's condemned entire sub-continents to vast cesspools of poverty, disease, and brutal ignorance.

Palestinian and Syrian Women are worthy of the Enslavement in which they and their Babies suffer eternal damnation, at the hands of Pseudo-Men whose Barbarism is only exceeded by their Pathetic Depravity towards the Moslem Boys playing at the local Mosque.

Palestinian and Syrian Women could have rebelled against their Depraved Male Slave-Masters decades ago, as did their Asian and Western European sisters. But the Arab's racial cowardice (genetically inbred over the centuries) condemns Arab Men and Children to flee from genuine Honor just as disease flees from Penecilum.

Why does the entire World turn away in disgust at the Palestinians and Syrians ?

Because even the monstrously evil Bolshevicks and Nazis had the courage to fight their enemies as Men, face-to-face, eyeball-to-eyeball.

Because even the deranged Japanese Kamakaze Pilots of World War II mustered the honor of a suicide-death in the face of Open Battle.

Accordingly, even fifty (50) years after World War II, American, Japanese, British, German and Russian soldiers will even toast together the mutal memory of their fallen comrades, because all were imbued with the Singular Honor of Men who Sacrificed Their Lives (on the field of battle) for their respective nations.

Palestinians and Syrians ? They cannot even comprehend such Honor.

It's as foreign to Palestinians and Syrians as America's Bill of Rights and the God-Ordained Right of Women to enjoy the blessings of life and family, without living as Dowery Slaves in the Shadow of Fear of being Burned at the Stake to satify the Satanic Monsters lurking in the Soul of every Islamic man.

Have I made my Point ?

Friend, I feel sorry for you! I hope the destiny of our great, free nation is not entrusted into your misguided hands. The Muslim terrorists just love dudes like you. I just know in my heart of hearts that John Kerry and Kofi Annan are going to keep you and your loved ones safe and sound. Now, please make no ruckus, when the "Daniel Pearl" boys come knocking at your door. And....they will come, you can bank on it! Fear not, Kerry and Annan will make it as painless as possible! NOT!!!!!!

President Bush is a visonary that will only be appreciated 100 years from now.

Y'know, I think what the President's critics don't get about him at all is that his faith guides him into doing what he sees as right, and he doesn't care about the bile spewn at him from all sides -- or even if he ultimately loses in '04.

The guy is alot stronger than I had ever imagined him to be. (For my children's sake, I'm glad he's the guy).

I get it, these people are living Disneyland if they think Rumsfeld is going to pull Syria into Iraq more than they already are. Until Iraq is secure it would be foolish to open up a new war front.

Very true.

Although most here on FR appreciate him now and understand the Grand Strategy he is attempting.

Monterry Strategic,Stratfor and Janes Intel marked a joint Israeli/U.S. special forces operation.
The event killed many North Korean technitions sent to assemble and train the Syrians.
Days later..North Korea requested a summit with the U.S...a 180 turn around from their previous stance.

Syria has a large Scud arsenal..spread out in sectors...some are roll out launch from mountain sides. Syria having seen its failure at Mechanized warfare with Israel..and Air combat, put their time and resources into the Scud c/d series which is North Koreas's knock off Soviet copies.

Most fascinating.

Thanks for pulling these incidents together.

Lack of resources?. Why do you say that. Do you think that it will send the region into total chaos. There are a lot of different opinions on this issue, most of them valid.

Is it politics?

I've been proudly in Iraq for about a year and will be for a while longer, and if we have to go to war if Syria, I'll gladly go. I'll even volunteer to go with a different unit if it comes down to it.
I say this because I look at the bigger picture. A little discomfort and serving more time here is a small price to pay for a safer world

You are the makings of another Greatest Generation.

I'll keep you in my prayers, armyboy.

Thanks for keeping me and mine safe.

no way, I don't know where you are getting these numbers, there aren't 100,000 actual fighters as part of the insurgency in iraq. if there were anywhere near that number, we would be in serious trouble. don't mistake some iraqis waving their arms in front of a burning vehicle on cue for a news camera, for an insurgent.

"President Bush is a visonary that will only be appreciated 100 years from now."

Bingo!

It is impossible for any DemocRAT mentality - (cynical opportunists and unstable relativists, all) - to be a visionary.

The reasons are obvious.

Cynical opportunists are selfishly focused on amassing power, money, and other advantages for themselves in the short term. And despite what they lead others to believe - they aren't interested in the current and future good of anyone other than themselves, and what pertains to them, personally.

A relativist's beliefs and ethics are changeable with each *situation*. As a result, cognitive dissonance (the mental confusion that results from holding polar opposite beliefs and ideas simultaneously) is the hallmark of a relativist.

So - it is quite evident that neither a self-focused cynical opportunist, or an emotionally immature, confused relativist could ever be a "visionary".

Only those that hold to the worldview of America's Framers, could have the hope of attaining "visionary" status.

Drill Sgt. Smith gets in your face and screams at the top of his lungs at you, while pointing first at your weapon and then at your crotch. "This is your WEAPON and this is your GUN! Now get down and give me 50 with your WEAPON on your hands and don't let your WEAPON touch the ground peter breath!" Seriously.

Ah, memories...

Options (from least to most severe):

1. Send Colin Powell to Syria and Iran so he can ask if "we can all just get along."

2. Impose more economic sanctions on Syria and Iran to get them to abandon terrorism and WMDs.

3. Use covert operations to topple the regimes in Syria and Iran. Hope that democracies arise from the aftermath.

4. Launch a surgical air strike against sites in Syria and Iran that are believed to contain terrorist assets and WMDs.

5. Launce a surgical air strike against the heads of state and their loyalists in Syria and Iran. Also, launch a surgical air strike against sites that are believed to contain terrorist assets and WMDs.

6. Carpet bomb Syria and Iran until the regimes surrender. The terms of surrender are that any terrorists and WMDs are either destroyed or turned over to U.S. military forces. If the terms of surrender are not met, resume carpet bombing. Repeat as necessary. For this option, occupation of the territories of Syria and Iran is not required.

7. Launch an Iraqi Freedom style invasion of Syria and Iran. Change the regimes and replace them with democracies. Hunt down any remaining terrorists and destroy any remaining WMDs.

8. Launch a massive nuclear strike on Syria and Iran.

Considerations: Do we have the necessary military assets (i.e. personnel, cruise missiles, jets, and munitions) to effectively complete the mission? Would a military draft be necessary? Would this be effective? Would this end the terrorist threat from the Syrian and Iranian regimes? Would this eliminate any WMDs they may have? What level of civillian casualties are we willing to tolerate? How would this affect our relationships with allies and international partners? What is the downside (if any)?

I don't think it has to be that complicated. It's not in our interest (or W's) to start another front right now. After the election, however, we invade Iran, not because we want to invade, but to defend Iraq...
