VATICAN CITY A top Vatican cardinal said today that priests must deny communion to pro-abortion Catholic politicians, but would not comment on the pro-abortion stand of Catholic presidential candidate John Kerry.
Cardinal Francis Arinze spoke during a press conference to launch a new Vatican directive clamping down on liturgical abuses in Mass which bars lay people from giving sermons, non-Catholics from taking communion and rites of other religions from being introduced in the service.
The document restated Church teaching that anyone who knows he is in grave sin must go to confession before taking communion.
Arinze was asked whether that meant that Kerry should not request or be given communion for his unapologetic support of human rights, including a womans right to abortion.

Why do these reporters expect that Kerry should be some sort of exception to the rules and morals of the Church he claims to follow?
I believe it was the Cardinal that refused to comment on Kerry's receiving communion.
Hmmm... I wonder why the Cardinal felt he couldn't comment on that.

How does the priest know who is pro-abortion? By reading the newspaper or watching TV, just like everybody else. I think it's safe to say that 99.9% of the politicians with a D in front of their names support the baby killers.

Well....considering that, for most of them, their Faith is for show..........

It was good that the Vatican came out with this, but it was a real chortle when they wouldn't go so far as to say Kerry shouldn't have gotten communion last week. Pro-choice Catholic pols don't get Communion, and that's final, unless their the Dem nominee.

What about democrats who say they are pro-life, but promote men like John Kerry?
To: flying Elvis
Roman Catholics believe that they symbolically receive the body and blood of Christ when they take communionIt's not symbolic.

How did we get to the place where slaughtering infants is a human right? Incredibly, at least twenty years before Sudan, Cuba and Libya got on the UN "human rights" commission.

How does the priest know who is pro-abortion? By not living in a cave.
Kerry has been voting hard-core pro-abort in the Senate for his whole career. Any priest in Boston who doesn't know he's a pro-abort needs a neurological exam immediately.

How does the priest know who is pro-abortion?In regards to politicans, you can't be serious. It's an open book policy.
To: stuartcr
Is everyone that distributes communion going to get pictures of all the pro-abortion politicians, so they will know who to refuse? I'll name 5, and only one of them is from my state:
Ted Kennedy
Gov. Granholm from Michigan
Gov. McGreevey from Jersey
Dick Durbin from Illinois
Nancy Pelosi
Surely if I know these people are pro-aborts, priests in their hometowns must know! You can add the entire Kennedy clan into that mix, and several of them hold congressional or state offices. Plus, most of these people campaign as pro-abort Catholics so the priest would know from that, or they could ask their local pro-life group. But the point is not to "get" every one, but to apply proper church discipline to the ones they do know about.

So, on top of conducting Mas, the priest and the lay Communion givers have to be able to quickly recognise all the local politicians?

So the priests and all the Lay Communion givers in the entire country have to be able to recognise their local pro-abortion politicians quickly enough in the Communion line to deny them the Host?

You may, but I'll bet their are many that could not recognise these people in a Communion line.

Nobody knows who is for abortion unless you attend public functions for it, vote for it and give money to fund it. That is a pretty clear message. John Kerry is not the only US Senator that will have to make a very public choice.
There are others. We will now see just who has faith and who uses faith for political reasons. Barbara Mulkowski are you listening?
