If Maureen Dowd ever had an original thought it would die of loneliness. I came to this conclusion after reading a column by her about lesbians, which is not so much about lesbians as it is about George Bush. Do not ask me how she links the two. She really doesnt; the column kind of rambles like an Al Sharpton campaign speech.
Her column, which is titled, Tizzy Over Lezzies does recycle some hackneyed concepts about our president. I say our president because Maureen is probably from the Alec Baldwin/Barbra Streisand school of politics. She must absolutely hate the fact that Bush is president. Maureen Dowd is noting if not mean.
Mean Maureens article contains the usual drivel implying that the presidents $130 million campaign fund is appalling. Of course, Dowd omits the fact that Democrats have millions of dollars as well (and if the Chinese yens value increases in relation to the dollar the Democrats will have even more millions). She makes the obligatory Democratic presidential campaign reference to the Willie Horton ad. This is a sixteen-year-old campaign ad the concept of which actually originated with Al Gore that Democrats try to say is an example of Republican campaign tactics. Dowd also makes the other obligatory comment that the Iraqi WMDs may not exist and this was the reason for going to war with Iraq. The only two clichés Dowd did not mention are the 2000 election and the Bush-as-Hitler analogy.
When she finally begins to write about lesbians she says, Women kissing women, often as a way of turning on men, has become such a staple of entertainment that by the time Madonna and Britney did it on stage, it seemed more stale than shocking. The Washington Post reported on Sunday that lesbian love had swept high schools here: You can see this new trend on Friday nights outside Union Station, sweethearts from high schools around the Washington area, some locking lips . . . These girls pack Ani DiFranco concerts and know Tatu lyrics by heart. Their attention is usually directed exclusively at each other, but not always: A group of girls at a private school in Northwest Washington charge boys $10 to watch the girls make out in front of them. Long regarded as the least glamorous of all minority groups, lesbians are now cover girls.
Now being from 8th and Oregon in South Philly, the sexual practices of students in tony, private DC high schools are something of which I am neither aware nor concerned. Why Dowd considers it important is inexplicable. Then again maybe it can be easily explained. Dowd is more parochial and more myopic than she is sophisticated and urbane - despite what she may think.
Her world is NW Washington DC or Manhattans West Side or Center City Philly. She is a charter member of the elite. For Dowd, tony DC high schools represent cool, hip, and trendy behavior. After all Dowd was probably a rich kid, DC prep school student herself.
Me, I am hoi polloi - lesbian sex is a geek show. Those rich DC kids paying ten bucks to watch the girls kiss each other have the cash to burn for watching geeks. Most normal high school kids would go to the local Red Light district and watch the same thing, done by pros, for free.
This lesbian sex stuff was made commonplace by Howard Stern. Next to porn films, Howard Stern has probably done more to advance the practice of lesbianism than any other institution or person. If you listen to his program or watch his show you will usually hear some mention of the subject.
Does Maureen Dowd listen to Howard Stern? The geeky, rich DC high school kids probably do. Dowd probably does too. Maybe Stern could ask Dowd to be a guest on his show. Maybe Stern could convince Maureen to kiss another woman during the program. Stern often convinces his female guests to do so.
Judging from her column it seems Dowd might like the idea as long as the other woman is not a Republican.

Centuries before this, parents took pains to prepare kids for marriage. Our culture doesn't. Our schools don't teach how to have successful lifetime love and marriage. Instead they teach self-centeredness and thinking only of yourself.
The greatest contribution one can make to society, is to really love your mate and love your children. This culture does not prepare our kids for this and the results are a love starved kids experimenting with drugs and sex. The results are predictable.... More lawlessness, promiscuity, abortion, suicide and more wasted lives.
May the Lord call our children out of this darkness and into the light of Eternal Love. May the Lord deliver us from an anti-family culture to one that promotes lifetime, one man and one woman marriages filled with His Gracious love; and families that last for generations in Faith. I ask it in His Blessed Name.
