Brazill's mother hands out gun locks
Thursday, April 22, 2004
RIVIERA BEACH -- If the gun Nathaniel Brazill used to kill his seventh-grade teacher on the last day of school had been equipped with a safety lock, his mother, Polly Powell, might not be here knocking on doors and Brazill might not be in prison.
Powell, of Lake Worth, walked the Stonybrook apartment complex at 1555 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. Wednesday, passing out gun locks to whoever would accept them. A day earlier, Primrose Walker, the mother of David Walker, the 14-year-old who was shot and killed by a classmate in February, distributed the locks at another Riviera Beach housing project.
Bishop Thomas Masters, pastor of New Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Riviera Beach, received 600 gun locks to distribute in Palm Beach County's inner-city neighborhoods in the hope of preventing more killings. In two days, he's passed out 200 locks. Sheriff Ed Bieluch has another 2,000.

"I want to help someone just make sure a parent doesn't
have to go through what I'm still going through right
now," said Powell, who visits Brazill every weekend she
has off from her job as a cook. "If it saves just one...."
I'm deeply saddened about the misery you must endure every day.
The struggles and challenges before you must be great, Ms Powell.
I'm quite sure the family of the teacher your child
murdered in cold blood feels your pain as well.

Don't blame the kid.
Don't blame the mother.
Don't blame the father(sic).
Blame the gun locks!

What a shame that, for want of a gun lock, this poor innocent child was forced to steal a gun, take it to school and shoot his teacher. I certainly hope this brave mother sues the manufacturer. Yes, it was sarcasm.

Amazing transferral of blame by the writers of the article.
(I also must admit to playing with the little sign thingy on your homepage to see what wiseguy stuff it will say.. Where'd you find that thing anyway? It's cool.)

Never forget that these Palm Beach gun lock crusaders are the same folks who couldn't figure out the 'butterfly ballot' in 2000...will they know how to operate a gun lock? Or for that matter, will they know for sure if it's loaded? Maybe some folks shouldn't have guns...or vote. My apologies to the normal minority who happen to live in the Palm Beach area...it's not your fault :-)

I certainly hope this brave mother sues the manufacturer. Actually, the manufacturer was sued by the murdered teacher's money-grubbing widow. She lost all my sympathy for that.

Just think, If the mother had brought her child up not to steal, he wouldn't have had the gun.

I think they should have at least given the name of the teacher for story background. Although, that would have redefined the victim in this story.
I stole the sign from the bottom of
Quilla's profile page.

LOL!
Lifted it from Qulla's page?
I'm going to have to give it a shot myself then!
Yes, I agree, they should have given the name of the teacher.
Doubt they will see it that way though.
There's an agenda with teh article, and admitting that the kid is a crook would skew that agenda and make it so much more obvious.
The feeling they're aiming at garnering with the article would be vastly different, they wouldn't get the desired result.

hmm, dont know why I am posting on this particular thread, but I always thought it was kind of weird that the gun grabbers want 'locks' to make sure that teenage children cant use guns. It is odd to me (growing up in the *very* rural south).. my father gave me my first shotgun when I was around 9 or 10 I believe.. and by the time I was 14 I had several hunting rifles.. as did all of my friends. In fact, it wasn't until I got to college last year that I really began to appreciate that some people were actually *terrified* of guns and had never even fired one (my girlfriend included.. she gets antsy every time I even go hunting .. guns are dangerous you know!) .. but oh well, she is one of those 'city folk' so I guess I will have to understand.. although when I take her home this summer to meet my parents I will definately try to talk her into shooting some skeet or whatnot. Anyways, I think the point of this so far pointless post is ....
bottom line, parents, dont blame the guns when your little monsters do something like this. You need to look squarely in the mirror, and quit trying to make life more difficult for law-abiding gun owners. I honestly feel like by the time I have a son, Ill be charged with child abuse/endangerment when he recieves his first hunting rifle.. and thats scary :/

'Xactly.
When I was younger, we didn't own guns but we WERE taught that you don't play with them as they aren't toys and yu always treat one as if it's loaded, you don't point it at something you don't want to destroy etc, etc.
These days the youth are NOT taught anythig remotely similar, they are not taught respect, and they are not taught politeness.
And attempting to teach such is termed by emotionally unstable officials and supposed mental health experts as 'child abuse' and 'damaging to self-esteem.'
