Necessity is the mother of invention.

So long as oil stays cheap and plentiful, there will be little incentive to develop alternative energy sources. As soon as it becomes financially rewarding to develop alternative energy sources, they will be developed quickly to meet the growing demand. This is why capitalism works so well.

I think the best case for developing alternative fuels is to break the back of the Middle East. We develop a viable alternative and their main source of income goes. Pretty good reason in my book.

I hope that this is true, but what if the new technologies are not developed fast enough to keep pace with demand?
