Arlen Specter either needs a little time in the woodshed, or an alternative candidate should be put forth as chair of the Judiciary Committee. Considering the sheer power that is concomitant with chairing that committee, several senior Republicans should be clamoring for that position. I would have suggested Charles Grassley of Iowa, or even reach across the aisle and call upon Joe Lieberman to fill the slot, as he may be counted upon to be more fair-minded about most judicial nominations than Specter.
Ideologues with litmus tests are not the foundation of open and fair discourse. Apparently Arlen Specter subscribes to the sacrament of legal and virtually unlimited abortion forever.
