The tuition isn't free. It's just that someone else is paying it for you.

Well actually, I don't look at that at all.
I've paid property taxes for the past 24 years.
My child was homeschooled, so I never took advantage of public education dollars that are allotted by the state taxes and local property taxes.
So it's my turn, as a homeschooler, to reap some of the benefits of my educational tax dollars.
IMHO, the major inequity in the program is that since I pay the same taxes as the public student parent, why are the books for the public school student free, and I, as a homeschooler, have to pay for the books.
I'm not up to "fighting" the inequity, but it does exist.
