Got to wonder why Brazil would want the A-bomb. Do they have that big a problem with biting insects?

I guess they should focus their energy on economic development. However, if their politicians wanted Brazil, a rather big nation, to be an nuclear power, I have no problem with that. After all, we allowed India, and Pakistan to become nuclear powers, and appear to be doing nothing as the evil Iran is trying to become one. Brazil is a peace loving nation.

Brazil is to lazy of a nation to ever use them, so let them have them it will fulfill there machismo fantasies without actually being macho.

Nukes ultimately only make Brazil a potential threat and therefore a target not a great power.

It is amazing how these generally poor countries spend vast sums of money to go nuclear when they are not threatened by anyone. Meanwhile their citizens starve.

Ambition and power are more important than their general welfare.

The planet is heading for a world of hurt.

Oh yeah. And that's optimistic.

There is some truth to your statement. Brazil was the only country in the Southern hemisphre to own a battleship, back when they were in vogue. They had no real use for it, but it was cool to own!

Other nations want nuclear weapons for the same reason we want nuclear weapons.

When it comes to nuclear weapons proliferation, America is the Dutch Boy, and the world is the Dike.

Let 'em have it. They don't have the money to build and maintain the forces to deliver and exploit. This is a total waste of money for nearly bankrupt state.
It like me buying a .50 cal Barret: I'd love to have one, but its too expensive, and where would I go to shoot it?

Lula is an ally of Chave (Venezuela) and Castro. This is the potential for serious mischief here.

Also now the only country in South America to own an aircraft carrier. The A-4 Skyhawks that the Brazilian Navy operate from the carrier are ex-Kuwaiti air force. They last saw combat against the Iraqi's during the 1990/1991 Gulf War when they were still in Kuwaiti hands.

"Brazil is going to be the first ever nuclear weapon state (NWS) in the Southern Hemisphere by 2010."

What about South Africa? It had nuclear weapons, and became the first nation to willingly destroy its own arsenal when it did away with the six weapons it had in the 80s. Unless my geography is totally warped I'd say it is hard to get further south in the southern hemisphere than South Africa (unless you decide to head towards the south pole).

Taylor had observed immediately after Brazil entered into an agreement with West Germany, that "Brazil will soon be able to produce enough plutonium for the country to reconstruct every two weeks a bomb."

Send us up the bomb.
