Hormel to Raise Prices on Spam, Dinty Moore and Other Products

AUSTIN, Minn. (AP) - Hormel Foods Corp. plans to raise prices on Spam and hundreds of other packaged food items by 4.5 percent to 6.5 percent because of rising commodity prices and other costs, a spokeswoman said Monday night. The prices of products such as Spam canned meats, Dinty Moore beef stew, Hormel chili, Chi-Chi's salsas and all other Hormel nonrefrigerated packaged products will increase in June, spokeswoman Julie Craven said.

Those products account for about 18 percent of the Austin, Minn.-based company's sales. The price hikes will affect hundreds of items when different package sizes are counted, she said.

It will be the company's first general price increase since 2000, Craven said.

Besides higher prices for commodities such as pork and beef, Craven said, Hormel was also trying to offset higher costs for transportation, packaging and medical benefits.

"We've seen all of those go up," she said. "This really is in response to the cumulative effect."

In February, Hormel reported first-quarter earnings of $51.8 million, up 10 percent from the first quarter a year ago, on sales of $1.1 billion, up 12 percent from the same quarter in 2003.
