Maybe I'm wrong, but I think Assad encouraged the Muslims in Syria to revolt against the long-standing arrangement between Lebanon's Maronite Christians and Muslims which had successfully maintained the balance of power in this most civilized of Middle Eastern countries. And of course Arafat and others encouraged the breakdown too.
Whether Lebanon can ever be put back together is a question. But there's no doubt that Syrian rule has been brutal, oppressive, and destructive. Things were much better there before Syria moved in. There's no excuse for them to be there, other than sheer greed and power hunger.
