Bush 'amnesty' blamed for rise in illegals

The number of illegal aliens being apprehended on the southwestern border has jumped 25 percent in the first three months of 2004 compared with last year, and some are blaming President Bush's immigration proposal in January for enticing immigrants across the border. "It doesn't take a rocket scientist to tell you the president's speech was the catalyst for lots of folks to make their way north and try to get into this country in order to get what they accurately believe to be amnesty," said Rep. Tom Tancredo, Colorado Republican and chairman of the House Immigration Reform Caucus.
The increase in apprehensions was driven by a spike within the two Arizona sectors, Yuma and Tucson, which saw increases of 60 percent and 51 percent, respectively. And if apprehensions are increasing, so is the number of illegal aliens making it across the border freely, said Mr. Tancredo and current and former immigration law-enforcement officials, who said they assume for every one person caught, three make it across safely.

I wish President Bush would have never done this, personally.

President Bush has my support on the WoT and Iraq, but not on illegals or his ballooning budgets.
Still better than Kerry.

You are right on that account, but can't someone refrain from using Bush and "blame" in the same sentence. It is getting tiresome.

Tancredo is a lunatic. He proposed virtually the same guest-worker plan that Bush is proposing now. I'm surprised at the WashTimes here. This article belongs in the WashPost.
BTW - Bush's plan is another brilliant stroke of genius that actually CUTS DOWN on illegals by forcing them to come out of the woodworks and identify themselves. Sorry naysayers, but you just can't round up illegals and load them into semis and drive them to Mehico. The logistics of it is too costly and overwhelming.

Here we go again. How many FReepers this time will "stay home" this election or vote for the Constitution Party knowing damn well that they're going to quietly vote for Bush anyway? Raise your hands....

You don't know what you're saying. It's NOT a stroke of genius you genius. My mother was replaced by an illegal Mexican for $5.00 an hour in her home health aide job. Tell me why should illegal Mexicans be rewarded for their lawbreaking?

Well, it seems that Bush's immigration policy would qualify him as a candidate for the Green Party. And it really sucks, because he is doing a good job with the recovery of the economy.

You don't know what you're saying. It's NOT a stroke of genius you genius. It is a stroke of genius if you myopic FReepers would actually read the context of Bush's plan instead of reading it second-hand from the like of malcontents such as Tancredo.
My mother was replaced by an illegal Mexican for $5.00 an hour in her home health aide job.
Surely your mother should better her education or learn new job skills then....and I doubt that home health aides make $5 an hour especially considering that the market for health-care related positions is in high demand and wages pay a lot more.
Tell me why should illegal Mexicans be rewarded for their lawbreaking?
They're not being rewarded. They're being identified and will now be forced to comply with our laws now once they apply for guest worker certificates.

My mother made $9.00 an hour as a home health aide till she was replaced by an illegal Mexican willing to work for $5.00 an hour. It is NOT a stroke of genius. They ARE being rewarded, rewarded with being allowed to stay here and rip off jobs from Americans and LEGAL immigrants like my mother. Go get a clue.

The logistics of it is too costly and overwhelming. It wasn't costly or overwhelming to President Eisenhower and his successful 'Operation Wetback' campaign.

I may be Mrs. GOP, but I am not as glib as others so I can't think of one.

Have to throw in this to support ya on this one. My aunt worked in health care. Over the last 5 years demand has risen and much of the hiring in nursing homes is actually going to folks from "Texas"...wink wink ...hehe
most of those that speak decent english move up. No questions are asked. The lower end/straight across the Rio types will do any work for barely minimum wage nursing homes, construction, etc.....and they just keep on a comin'

I agree, it's the favorite phrase for the leftist loony media.

BTW, I should say here in New York more and more illegal Mexicans are showing up because of the coyotes who run buns through Oklahoma and then into New York City and even FLY them in. They are brought in by coyotes and shunted around like slaves because Vicente Fox has them so miserable in their own country they'll work for anything.
I know your aunt knows what I'm talking about *LOL*

I don't like amnesty. That is one thing I disagree with the President on...I just don't like the "blame Bush" phrase.
