[history]
Todd Birch apparently knew he was too intoxicated to drive, but he gave his car keys to the wrong person, authorities said.
Shortly after leaving a Downtown bar early Thursday, the 24-year-old man died after he was run over by his own car.

Morning Samwise.
It doesn't make much sense to pick a designated driver who's as drunk as you are.

I smell a HUGE lawsuit...from what I remember when my daughters were of that age, bars who subcribed to a designated driver program, and most do, because it's good publicity, and helps a little with their insurance costs, as well as it looks like hell in a lawsuit if they don't support the program..anyways the offer FREE soft-drinks and food to the DD, but the DD has to wear somekind of colored wrist bracelet, or somesuch...so, in fact, if the bar was serving the DD..well, the owner can just about hand over the keys now...

The Slippery Noodle does not offer free food or drinks to us non-drinking designated drivers.
Great blues bar, though.

If so, then they probably goofed, big time...as I wrote, the DD's are supposed to be identified as such...

f so, then they probably goofed, big time...as I wrote, the DD's are supposed to be identified as such... Is that a program in your state? I don't drink at all, and no one has ever given me free food or beverages, or labeled me. If they did, we could afford to go out more often. :^)

I think handing over his keys to a drunk should qualify him for a Darwin Award.

I don't think this was a "designated driver" situation. Just giving the keys to someone whose had less to drink than you doesn't qualify. You have to designate the driver BEFORE the drinking starts.

I don't think it's a "state" program, per se, rather the liquor industray and the tavern owners associations sponser them...around here, in the college bars and those that frequent a younger crowd, if 4 or more go in, and one is the DD...you get a wrist band, and get free soft-drinks and food...
